Claims
- 1. A composition of matter represented by the formula
- M.sup.n+.sub.z/n [Si.sub.(2-x-y) Al.sub.(y) Zn.sub.(x) ]O.sub.4 .multidot..cndot.wH.sub.2 O
- wherein
- M is a cation selected from Groups 1, 2, 7, 10, 11, 12 and the f block elements as defined by the Periodic Table of the elements as adopted by IUPAC;
- n is the valence of the selected cation, M;
- x is greater than or equal to 0.02 but less than or equal to 1;
- y is less than or equal to 0.98;
- z>0.54; and
- w ranges from 0 to about 8;
- provided that when z.gtoreq.0.80, then 2x+y does not equal z;
- which composition of matter has the FAU structure with zinc residing in tetrahedral positions in the framework of the FAU structure;
- and whereupon such composition of matter is converted to a hydrated sodium form, the hydrated sodium form of the composition of matter exhibits a lattice constant (a.sub.0)
- wherein ##EQU4## where R represents the Si/Al molar ratio of the composition of matter.
- 2. The composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein M is a mixture of at least two cations selected from Groups 1, 2, 7, 10, 11, 12 and the f block elements as defined by the Periodic Table of the elements as adopted by IUPAC.
- 3. The composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein x ranges from 0.02 to 0.2 and y ranges from 0.80 to 0.98.
- 4. The composition of matter according to claim 2 wherein the mixture of at least two cations comprises lithium.
- 5. The composition of matter according to claim 4 wherein the mixture of at least two cations comprises at least 50 equivalent percent lithium.
- 6. A composition of matter represented by the formula
- M.sup.n+.sub.z/n [Si.sub.(2-x-y) Al.sub.(y) Zn.sub.(x) ]O.sub.4 .cndot.wH.sub.2 O
- wherein
- M is a cation selected from Groups 1, 2, 7, 10, 11, 12 and the f block elements as defined by the Periodic Table of the elements as adopted by IUPAC;
- n is the valence of the selected cation; M;
- x is greater than or equal to 0.02 but less than or equal to 1;
- y is a value less than or equal to 0.98;
- z is greater than or equal to 0.80;
- w ranges from 0 to about 8;
- provided that when z.gtoreq.0.80, then 2x+y does not equal z; and
- wherein the composition of matter has the FAU structure and zinc resides in tetrahedral positions in the framework of the FAU structure.
- 7. The composition of matter according to claim 6 wherein M is a mixture of at least two of the cations selected from Groups 1, 2, 7, 10, 11, 12 and the f block elements as defined by the Periodic Table of the elements as adopted by IUPAC.
- 8. The composition of matter according to claim 6 wherein x ranges from 0.02 to 0.2 and y ranges from 0.80 to 0.98.
- 9. The composition of matter according to claim 7 wherein the mixture of at least two cations comprises lithium.
- 10. The composition of matter according to claim 9, wherein the mixture of at least two cations comprises at least 50 equivalent percent lithium.
- 11. A composition of matter represented by the formula
- M.sup.n+.sub.z/n [Si.sub.(2-x-y) Al.sub.(y) Zn.sub.(x) ]O.sub.4 .cndot.wH.sub.2 O
- M is a cation selected from the group consisting of lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, nickel, manganese, lanthanum, cerium and praseodymium;
- n is the valence of the selected cation;
- x is greater than or equal to 0.02 but less than or equal to 1;
- y is a value less than or equal to 0.98;
- w ranges from 0 to about 8;
- z is greater than or equal to 0.80;
- provided that when z.gtoreq.0.80, then 2x+y does not equal z; and
- wherein the composition of matter has the FAU structure and zinc resides in tetrahedral positions in the framework of the FAU structure.
- 12. The composition of matter according to claim 11 wherein M is a mixture of at least two cations selected from the group consisting of lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, nickel, manganese, lanthanum, cerium and praseodymium.
- 13. The composition of matter according to claim 12 wherein x ranges from 0.02 to 0.2 and y ranges from 0.80 to 0.98.
- 14. The composition of matter according to claim 13 wherein the mixture of at least two cations comprises lithium.
- 15. The composition of matter according to claim 14 wherein the mixture of at least two cations comprises at least 50 equivalent percent lithium.
- 16. The composition of matter according to claim 11 wherein M is calcium.
- 17. The composition of matter according to claim 14 wherein the mixture of at least two cations comprises at least 50 equivalent percent calcium.
- 18. A method of separating a more strongly adsorbable component from one or more less strongly adsorbable components residing in a gaseous mixture comprising contacting the gaseous mixture at elevated pressure with a composition according to claim 1 and adsorbing said more strongly adsorbed gas specie on the composition.
- 19. A method of separating a more strongly adsorbable component from one or more less strongly adsorbable components residing in a gaseous mixture comprising the steps of:
- a) contacting the gaseous mixture with a composition according to claim 1 at a pressure above ambient and adsorbing the more adsorbable component onto the compositions while allowing the less strongly adsorbable components to be recovered as an unadsorbed product;
- b) terminating contact of the gaseous mixture onto the composition and reducing the pressure on the composition thereby desorbing the more strongly adsorbable component;
- c) repressurizing the composition and
- d) repeating steps a)-c) to provide a continuous process.
- 20. The method of claim 19 wherein the composition is cation exchanged with lithium cations to replace at least 50% of exchangeable cations in the composition.
- 21. The method of claim 19 wherein said more strongly adsorbable component is nitrogen and one of the less strongly adsorbable components is oxygen.
- 22. The method of claim 19 wherein the gaseous mixture is air.
- 23. The method of claim 19 wherein the adsorbent is contained in a plurality of parallel connected adsorption vessels and the steps are performed within each vessel so that when at least one vessel is undergoing step a), at least one other vessel is undergoing steps b) and/or c).
