Claims
- 1. A method of preparing a crystalline zirconium oxide powder which has a BET surface area in the range of 10 to 20 m.sup.2 /g, a primary particle size of 0.1 to 0.5 .mu.m and having a monoclinic crystal structure, said powder consisting essentially of zirconium oxide and 0.1 to 10% of at least one member of the group consisting of Y.sub.2 O.sub.3 and MgO coprecipitated with the zirconium oxide, said powder having a particle size distribution of 90% between 0.1 and 1 .mu.m,
- said method comprising adding, with agitation, an aqueous solution consisting essentially of water, zirconium salt and a member of the group consisting of yttrium and magnesium salts to an aqueous base solution containing at least 0.5 moles per liter excess of base, treating the resulting mixture hydrothermally at a temperature of 200.degree. to 400.degree. C., separating precipitated zirconium oxide powder and drying said powder.
- 2. A method as set forth in claim 1 including separating the product obtained after hydrothermal treatment, washing to remove anions and drying the product at 100.degree. to 120.degree. C.
- 3. A method as set forth in claim 1 in which the aqueous base solution is a solution of sodium hydroxide which has a content of NaOH which corresponds to an excess of at least 0.5 mole/liter NaOH.
- 4. A method as set forth in claim 1 in which the zirconium salt is selected from the group consisting of ZrOCl.sub.2, ZrO(NO.sub.3).sub.2, ZrOSO.sub.4, Zr(NO.sub.3).sub.4 and Zr(SO.sub.4).sub.2.
- 5. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which the zirconium salt solution contains an yttrium salt.
- 6. A method as set forth in claim 5 in which the yttrium salt is selected from the group consisting of YCl.sub.3, Y(NO.sub.3).sub.3 and Y acetate.
- 7. A method as set forth in claim 4 in which the zirconium salt solution contains a magnesium salt.
- 8. A method as set forth in claim 7 in which the magnesium salt is selected from the group consisting of MgCl.sub.2, Mg(NO.sub.3).sub.2, MgSO.sub.4 and Mg acetate.
