Claims
- 1. A zoom assembly having a plurality of different zoom positions and focus adjustment for different object distances in each of said zoom positions, said zoom assembly comprising:
- a zoom lens having a plurality of lens groups defining an optical axis; and
- a cam barrel centered about said optical axis and having an inner peripheral surface including a plurality of identical cam grooves and no other cam grooves for moving one of said lens groups relative to another one of said lens groups, each of said cam groves including
- (i) a set of primary zoom sections, each one corresponding to one of said zoom positions and having a slope with respect to said optical axis, a subset of said set of said primary zoom sections having slopes of one common sign, said set of primary zoom sections also including at least one primary zoom section having a slope of opposite sign from the sign of the slopes of said subset of said set of primary zoom sections, and
- (ii) a set of intermediate sections corresponding to transitions from one of said plurality of zoom positions to another of said plurality of zoom positions, each of said intermediate sections having a slope with respect to said optical axis, wherein (a) said a set of intermediate sections includes a subset of intermediate sections each of which is being located between said primary zoom sections that form said subset of said primary zoom sections, and (b) said subset of intermediate sections has slopes of an opposite sign to said slopes of one, common sign.
- 2. A zoom assembly according to claim 1, wherein each of said primary zoom sections has a focusing subsection providing focus adjustment in each of said zoom positions.
- 3. A zoom assembly according to claim 2, wherein said set of intermediate sections also includes at least one intermediate section having a slope of opposite sign from the sign of the slopes of said subset of said intermediate sections.
- 4. A zoom assembly according to claim 1, wherein said set of intermediate sections also includes at least one intermediate section having a slope of opposite sign from the sign of the slopes characterizing said subset of intermediate sections.
- 5. A zoom assembly comprising:
- a zoom lens defining an optical axis, said zoom lens being capable of operating in a plurality of different zoom positions and of focus adjustment for different object distances in each of said zoom positions; and
- a cam barrel having an inner peripheral surface including a plurality of identical cam grooves and no other cam grooves, each of said cam grooves including
- (i) a plurality of zoom sections having slopes with respect to said optical axis and corresponding to each of said zoom positions, each of said sections having a focusing subsection providing focus adjustment in each of said zoom positions, wherein a subset of said focusing subsections has slopes of one sign and another subset of said focusing subsections has a slopes of an opposing sign, and
- (ii) a plurality of intermediate sections having slopes with respect to said optical axis and corresponding to transitions from one zoom position to another zoom position, wherein a subset of said intermediate sections is characterized by slopes of one sign and, another subset of said intermediate sections are characterized by slopes of an opposite sign.
- 6. A zoom assembly comprising:
- a zoom lens having a plurality of different zoom positions and focus adjustment for different object distances in each of said zoom positions, said zoom lens including of a plurality of movable lens groups defining an optical axis, at least two of said plurality of movable lens groups being movable relative to one another, at least one of said lens groups being supported by a lens cell having an outer peripheral surface with at least one cam follower; and
- a cam barrel having an inner peripheral surface with at least one cam groove engaging said cam follower, said cam groove including:
- (i) a plurality of sections corresponding to each of said zoom positions with subsections for providing focus adjustment in each of said zoom positions, there being five primary zoom sections of which three consecutive primary zoom sections have slopes of one sign and at least one other primary zoom section has a slope of an opposing sign, and
- (ii) a plurality of transitional sections corresponding to transitions from one zoom position to another zoom position, each of said plurality of transitional sections having a slope with respect to said optical axis, wherein some of these slopes are of one, common sign and at least one of said plurality of transitional slopes has a slope of an opposite sign.
- 7. A zoom assembly according to claim 6, wherein said cam barrel at least partially encloses said lens cell, said cam barrel being rotatable about the optical axis and translatable along the optical axis.
- 8. A zoom assembly according to claim 6, wherein said zoom lens consists of three lens groups, said three lens groups being a front lens group, a middle lens group and a rear lens group, said front and said rear lens groups moving together at the same speed and direction for both zooming and focusing.
- 9. A zoom assembly according to claim 1, wherein said front lens group is positive, said second lens group is positive and said rear lens group is negative.
- 10. A zoom assembly according to claim 9, wherein said zoom lens includes at least one aspherical surface in at least two of said lens groups.
- 11. A zoom assembly according to claim 10, wherein said rear lens group includes at least one aspherical surface.
- 12. A zoom assembly according to claim 9, wherein said first lens group consists of a positive power lens element and a negative power lens element, said second lens group consists of two lens elements, at least one of which is biconvex and said rear lens group consists of a single negative lens element.
