Claims
- 1. A method for absorbing and binding of liquid organic contaminants, said method comprising passing liquid organic contaminants through a filter device comprising a filter unit which has a composition containing at least one cycloolefin copolymer having polymerized units which are derived from at least one cyclic olefin unit having one unsaturated bond (monoene) and at least one acyclic olefin incorporated into said filter unit.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein said composition contains between about 10% and 100% by weight of at least one cycloolefin copolymer.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein said cyclic olefin is polycyclic.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein said cycloolefin copolymer is a norbornene ethylene copolymer.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein said cycloolefin copolymer contains polymerized units which are derived from at least one polycyclic olefin, at least one acyclic olefin, and at least one polycylic diene.
- 6. The method of claim 5, wherein said polycyclic diene is norbornadiene or 2-vinylnorbornene.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein said cycloolefin copolymer is norbornene norbornadiene ethylene terpolymer or norbornene 2-vinylnorbornene ethylene terpolymer.
- 8. The method of claim 1, wherein said cycloolefin copolymer has a glass transition temperature (T.sub.g) of between about 100 and about 250.degree. C.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein said cycloolefin copolymer has a viscosity number of between about 60 cm.sup.3 /g and about 200 cm.sup.3 /g.
- 10. The method of claim 1, wherein said composition is in the shape of particles, mats, or layers.
- 11. A method for absorbing and binding of liquid organic contaminants, said method comprising passing liquid organic contaminants through a filter device comprising a filter unit which has a composition containing from 10 to 100% by weight of at least one cycloolefin copolymer incorporated into said filter unit and said at least one cycloolefin copolymer contains at least 30 to 99% by weight of one or more polycyclic olefins based on the total weight of the cycloolefin copolymer and 0.1 to 99% by weight, based on the total weight of the cycloolefin copolymer polymerized units which are derived from one or more acyclic olefins of the formula VII ##STR4## in which R.sup.9, R.sup.10, R.sup.11 and R.sup.12 are identical or different and are a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 -hydrocarbon radical.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the polycyclic olefins are of the formulas I, II, III, IV, V or VI ##STR5## in which R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, R.sup.7 and R.sup.8 are identical or different and are a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 -hydrocarbon radical, or form a ring where the same radicals R.sup.1 to R.sup.8 in the various formula I to VI can have different meanings.
- 13. The method of claim 12, wherein the cycloolefin copolymer is present in an amount from 50 to 100% by weight and 60 to 99% by weight of the total weight of the cycloolefin copolymer are derived from one or more polycyclic olefins of the formula I, II, III, IV, V or VI.
- 14. The method of claim 13, which further comprises from 0.1 to 99% by weight based on the total weight of the cycloolefin copolymer, of polymerized units which are derived from one or more monocyclic olefins of the formula VIII ##STR6## in which n is a number from 2 to 10.
- 15. The method of claim 13, wherein the cycloolefin copolymer is present in an amount from 90 to 100% by weight and the polycyclic olefin is norbornene, tetracyclododecene or norbornadine and the acyclic olefin of the formula VII is ethylene or propylene.
- 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the polycyclic olefin is norbornene and the acyclic olefin is ethylene.
- 17. A method for absorbing and binding of liquid organic contaminants, said method comprising passing liquid organic contaminants through a filter device comprising a filter unit which has a terpolymer composition incorporated into said filter unit, said terpolymer contains 20 to 95% by weight of at least polycyclic monoolefin, 0.1 to 99% by weight of an acyclic monoolefin and up to 50% by weight of polymerized units which are derived from a polyene incorporated into said filter unit.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the content of a polycyclic monoolefin is from 40 to 90% by weight and the acyclic monoolefin is present in an amount from 10 to 60% by weight and the polyene is present in an amount up to at most 20% by weight.
- 19. The method of claim 18, wherein the terpolymer is norbenene/vinylnorbornene/ethylene, norbornene/norbornadiene/ethylene, tetracyclododecene/vinylnorbornene/ethylene or tetracyclododecene/vinyltetracyclododecene/ethylene.
