Claims
- 1. A formed article made by thermoforming a cured acrylic product having a textured surface, said cured acrylic product made by a method comprising mixing into a syrup comprising about 80 to about 95% by weight methylmethacrylate and about 5 to about 20% by weight polymethylmethacrylate, an additional 5 to about 25% by weight particulate polymethylmethacrylate based on the weight of the syrup, said particulates containing up to about 1.0% crosslinking agent, based on the weight of the particles, and having a particle size predominantly about 0.1 to about 2.0 mm in the largest dimension, said particulate polymethylmethacrylate additionally characterized by comprising about 70% to about 90% by weight crosslinked polymethylmethacrylate and about 10% to about 30% by weight uncrosslinked polymethylmethacrylate, swelling said particulate polymethylmethacrylate in said syrup by absorption of about 100% or more of its weight from said syrup, and curing said syrup containing said particulate polymethylmethacrylate in swollen form, thereby providing a continuity of said matrix interpenetrating said particles.
- 2. A thermoformed acrylic article comprising a cured matrix of a polymer of methylmethacrylate having dispersed within it preformed particles of polymethylmethacrylate containing up to about 1.0% crosslinking agent and predominantly, prior to said dispersion, from about 0.1 mm to about 2.0 mm in the largest dimension wherein about 70% to about 90% of the composition of said preformed particles comprises crosslinked polymethylmethacrylate and about 10% to about 30% by weight of the composition of said preformed particles comprises uncrosslinked polymer, said matrix exhibiting a continuity interpenetrating said preformed particles, said particles being expanded by absorption of methylmethacrylate to a volume more than twice that of their volume prior to said dispersion, the methylmethacrylate so absorbed, in polymerized form, being part of said matrix interpenetrating said particles.
