Claims
- 1. A load-handling clamp having selectively closable and openable load-engaging surfaces for selectively gripping and releasing a load positioned between said surfaces, said clamp comprising:
(a) at least one fluid power actuator connected to at least one of said surfaces for selectively closing said surfaces relative to each other to grip said load; (b) at least one fluid valve assembly connected to said actuator for variably regulating the maximum fluid pressure causing said actuator to close said surfaces relative to each other; (c) an electrical controller connected to said valve assembly automatically operable, in response to closure of said load-engaging surfaces into a predetermined relationship with said load, to cause said valve assembly to reduce said maximum fluid pressure while said surfaces are closing, and thereafter automatically operable, in response to at least one characteristic of said load, to cause said valve assembly to increase said maximum fluid pressure variably in relation to said characteristic of said load.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said predetermined relationship is a predetermined resistance by said load to closure of said load-engaging surfaces.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said controller is automatically operable, in response to the weight of said load, to cause said valve to increase said maximum fluid pressure variably in relation to the magnitude of said weight.
- 4. A load-handling clamp having selectively closable and openable load-engaging surfaces for selectively gripping and releasing a load positioned between said surfaces, said clamp comprising:
(a) at least one fluid power actuator connected to at least one of said surfaces for selectively closing said surfaces relative to each other to grip said load; (b) at least one fluid valve assembly connected to said actuator for variably regulating the maximum fluid pressure causing said actuator to close said surfaces relative to each other; (c) an electrical controller connected to said valve assembly automatically operable, in response to the weight of said load, to cause said valve assembly to increase said maximum fluid pressure variably in relation to the magnitude of said weight; (d) an elongate, longitudinally-extensible lifting mechanism for lifting said load to enable said load to be weighed, said lifting mechanism supporting the weight of said load longitudinally by means of at least one reactive force in said mechanism which is variably dependent upon the longitudinally-extensible position of said mechanism; (e) said controller being operable to sense the magnitude of said reactive force and to determine therefrom the magnitude of said weight of said load independently of changes in said longitudinally-extensible position of said mechanism effective to vary said reactive force.
- 5. A load-handling clamp having selectively closable and openable load-engaging surfaces for selectively gripping and releasing a load positioned between said surfaces, said clamp comprising:
(a) at least one fluid power actuator connected to at least one of said surfaces for selectively closing said surfaces relative to each other to grip said load; (b) at least one fluid valve assembly connected to said actuator for variably regulating the maximum fluid pressure causing said actuator to close said surfaces relative to each other; (c) an electrical controller connected to said valve assembly automatically operable, in response to the weight of said load, to cause said valve assembly to increase said maximum fluid pressure variably in relation to the magnitude of said weight; (d) said controller being operable, in response to a variable selector, to cause said valve assembly to increase said maximum fluid pressure alternatively in different predetermined relationships to the magnitude of said weight depending upon variation of said selector.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said selector is manually variable.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said selector is automatically variable in response to code reading.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said selector is automatically variable in response to variations in proximity of said load-engaging surfaces to each other.
- 9. A load-handling clamp having selectively closable and openable load-engaging surfaces for selectively gripping and releasing a load positioned between said surfaces, said clamp comprising:
(a) at least one fluid power actuator connected to at least one of said surfaces for selectively closing said surfaces relative to each other to grip said load with a gripping force in response to actuation of a load-clamping selector valve; (b) at least one fluid valve assembly connected to said actuator for variably regulating said gripping force; (c) an electrical controller connected to said valve assembly automatically operable, in response to a sensed weight of said load, to cause said valve assembly to increase said gripping force controllably in predetermine relation to the magnitude of said weight without concurrent actuation of said load-clamping selector valve.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said load-clamping selector valve is manually operable.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said controller is selectively operable as described in element (c) in response to support of said load by said pair of load-engaging surfaces.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said controller is automatically operable, in response to a decrease in said gripping force, to cause said valve assembly to increase said gripping force controllably in predetermined relation to the magnitude of said weight without concurrent actuation of said load-clamping selector valve.
- 13. A load-handling clamp having selectively closable and openable load-engaging surfaces for selectively gripping and releasing a load positioned between said surfaces, said clamp comprising:
(a) at least one fluid power actuator connected to at least one of said surfaces for selectively closing said surfaces relative to each other to grip said load; (b) at least one fluid valve assembly connected to said actuator for variably regulating the maximum fluid pressure causing said actuator to close said surfaces relative to each other; (c) a lifting mechanism operable, in response to actuation of a tilt selector, to lift said load by tilting said load to enable said load to be weighed; and (d) an electrical controller connected to said valve assembly automatically operable, in response to the weight of said load, to cause said valve assembly to increase said maximum fluid pressure variably in relation to variations in the magnitude of said weight caused solely by said actuation of said tilt selector.
- 14. A load-handling clamp having selectively closable and openable load-engaging surfaces for selectively gripping and releasing a load positioned between said surfaces, said clamp comprising:
(a) at least one fluid power actuator connected to at least one of said surfaces for selectively closing said surfaces relative to each other to grip said load; (b) a tilting mechanism operable to tilt said load; (c) a gravity-referenced sensor operable to determine whether or not said load is tilted relative to gravity; and (d) an electrical controller connected to said tilting mechanism automatically operable, in response to said gravity-referenced sensor, to cause said tilting mechanism to adjust said load to an attitude which is untilted with respect to gravity.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 including a lifting mechanism operable to lift and lower said load linearly, said controller being automatically operable selectively in response to lowering of said load by said lifting mechanism.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 14 including a lifting mechanism operable to lift and lower said load linearly, said gravity-referenced sensor being operable to determine whether or not said load is tilted with respect to gravity irrespective of any tilting of said lifting mechanism.
- 17. A load-handling apparatus comprising:
(a) a load-engaging structure; (b) a selectively liftable and lowerable lifting mechanism to selectively lift and lower said load-engaging structure, said lifting mechanism having an electrical controller automatically operable, in response to lowering of said load onto a supporting surface, to prevent lowering of said lifting mechanism; (c) said lifting mechanism having an elongate, longitudinally-extensible structure operable to support the weight of said load longitudinally by means of at least one reactive force in said mechanism which is variably dependent upon the longitudinally-extensible position of said mechanism, said lowering controller being operable to detect, from said reactive force, said lowering of said load onto said supporting surface independently of changes in said longitudinally-extensible position of said mechanism effective to vary said reactive force.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein said load-handling structure is a clamp.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein said lifting mechanism includes a variable lowering speed controller, and a lowering speed limiter operable independently of said lowering speed controller.
- 20. A load-handling clamp having selectively closable and openable load-engaging surfaces for selectively gripping and releasing a load positioned between said surfaces, said clamp comprising:
(a) at least one power actuator connected to at least one of said surfaces for selectively closing and opening said surfaces relative to each other to selectively grip and release said load; (b) a selectively liftable and lowerable lifting mechanism to selectively lift and lower said load, said lifting mechanism having an electrical lowering controller automatically operable, in response to lowering of said load onto a supporting surface, to prevent lowering of said lifting mechanism until said load-engaging surfaces have been opened to disengage said load; (c) said lowering controller being responsive to a first sensor operable to detect said lowering of said load onto said supporting surface, and a second sensor separate from said first sensor operable to detect that said load-engaging surfaces have been opened to disengage said load.
