Claims
- 1. In a system for converting digital information into a light image, the combination comprising
- a source of digital data,
- a first light source means for producing a first light beam having a predetermined direction,
- first optical modulation means for varying the intensity of said first beam in accordance with said digital data,
- a first mirror positioned to direct said beam along a predetermined path to said modulation means,
- first movable support means supporting said modulation means and said first mirror in predetermined fixed relationship,
- first means for adjusting the angular position of said movable support means thereby to simultaneously position said first modulation means and said first mirror with respect to the path of said light beam prior to impinging on said first mirror, and
- a second mirror positioned to intercept said beam after intensity modulation by said modulation means and direct it along a final beam path,
- said first means for adjusting the angular position of the movable support means being angularly adjustable independently from said first light source and said second mirror.
- 2. The system as claimed in claim 1 wherein
- said first light source means is a laser.
- 3. The system as claimed in claim 1 including
- a second light source for producing a second beam of wavelengths different from said first light beam,
- second modulator means for varying the intensity of said second beam in accordance with said digital data,
- a third mirror positioned to direct said second beam along a predetermined path to said second modulator,
- second movable support means supporting said second modulator and said third mirror in fixed predetermined relationship,
- second means for adjusting the angular position of said second movable support means thereby to simultaneously position said modulator and said third mirror with respect to the path of said second light beam impinging on said third mirror from said second source, and
- a fourth mirror positioned to intercept said second beam after intensity modulation by said second modulator and direct it along said final beam path.
- 4. A system as claimed in claim 3 wherein
- said second mirror has dichroic characteristics whereby the wavelengths of said first beam are reflected and the wavelengths of said second beam are transmitted.
- 5. The system as claimed in claim 4 wherein
- said first and second sources are respectively lasers having different color characteristics.
- 6. In a photoplotter, the method of providing a focused exposure beam comprising the steps of
- providing a source of digital data,
- providing a first light beam source,
- providing an optical modulator for varying the intensity of a light beam in accordance with said digital data,
- positioning a first mirror to direct said beam into said modulator,
- intercepting said beam with a second mirror after intensity modulation by said modulator,
- simultaneously adjusting the angles of said first mirror and said modulator while maintaining said first mirror and said modulator in fixed relationship independent of the movements of said source of said first light beam or said second mirror, and
- independently adjusting the azimuth, elevation and lateral position of said second mirror without affecting the positions of said first mirror and said modulation means to direct said beam along a final beam path.
- 7. The method as claimed in claim 6 including the steps of
- providing a second light beam source,
- providing a second optical modulator capable of intensity modulating a beam in accordance with said digital data,
- providing a third mirror positioned to direct said second beam into said second modulator,
- simultaneously adjusting the angles of said third mirror and said second modulator to direct said beam along a second predetermined path,
- intercepting said second beam after intensity modulation by said second modulator with a fourth mirror, and
- independently adjusting the azimuth, elevation and lateral position of said fourth mirror without affecting the positions of said third mirror and said second modulation means to direct said beam along said final beam path.
- 8. The method as claimed in claim 7 wherein
- said first mirror and said first modulator are mounted on a first pivotal support movable independently from said first beam source and said second mirror, and
- said third mirror and said second modulator are mounted on a second pivotal support movable independently from said second beam source and said fourth mirror.
- 9. The method as claimed in claim 8 wherein
- said second mirror has dichroic characteristics whereby
- the wavelengths of said first beam are reflected and the wavelengths of said second beam are transmitted.
- 10. The method as claimed in claim 9 wherein
- said first and second light beam sources are lasers having different color characteristics.
