- 16. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein determining the status of the line comprises determining a speed of digital services appropriate for the line.
- 17. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the receiving of the request and the replying to the request with the status of the line occur in essentially real-time.
- 18. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the receiving of the request and the replying to the request occur in batch mode.
- 19. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the receiving of the request and the replying to the request with the status of the line occur over the Internet.
- 20. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein storing the data comprises storing telephone numbers for the lines and receiving the request comprises receiving a telephone number of the line.
- 21. The method as set forth in claim 1, wherein storing the data comprises storing addresses associated with the lines and receiving the request comprises receiving an address associated with the line.

- 24. The method as set forth in claim 1, further comprising testing lines and updating the data with results of the testing.
- 25. The method as set forth in claim 1, further comprising tracking requests on the status of the lines and replies with the status and generating reports from information gathered from the tracking.
- 26. A system for qualifying lines for digital service, comprising:
a database containing data on the characteristics of the lines; an interface for receiving requests on the status of certain lines; and a server for processing the requests by evaluating the data on the lines and for determining a status of the lines; wherein the server generates responses to the requests with the responses indicating the status of the lines.
- 27. The system as set forth in claim 26, further comprising a second interface for receiving the data from a database containing engineering data on the lines.
- 28. The system as set forth in claim 26, further comprising a second interface for receiving the data from a database containing inventory data on the lines.
- 29. The system as set forth in claim 26, further comprising a second interface for receiving data on planned lines.
- 30. The system as set forth in claim 26, wherein the server generates the responses in essentially real-time after receiving the requests through the interface.
- 31. The system as set forth in claim 26, wherein the server receives the requests and generates the responses in batch mode.
- 32. The system as set forth in claim 26, wherein the database includes data on wire centers and the server determines the status of the lines by evaluating the data on the wire centers.
- 33. The system as set forth in claim 26, wherein the database includes data on taper codes and the server determines the status of the lines by evaluating the data on the taper codes.
