Claims
- 1. An apparatus for applying texture onto a surface in one of a plurality of predetermined texture patterns, comprising:
- a) container means for containing pressurized texture material;
- b) an elongate dispensing passageway having a discharge opening;
- c) valve means for selectively opening or closing an exit path by which texture material may flow from the container into the dispensing passageway; and
- d) an actuator member connected to the valve means, where displacement of the actuator member into an open position causes the valve means to open the exit path; wherein
- e) the dispensing passageway has a cross-sectional area at the discharge opening that corresponds to a selected one of the plurality of predetermined texture patterns; and
- f) the dispensing passageway is arranged adjacent to the surface such that, when the actuator member is displaced into the open position, pressure within the container causes the texture material to pass through the dispensing passageway, out of the discharge opening, and onto the surface, where the texture material hardens and forms the selected one of the predetermined texture patterns.
- 2. An apparatus as recited in claim 1, further comprising selecting means for allowing the operator to select a cross-sectional area of the discharge opening to obtain the selected one of the predetermined texture patterns.
- 3. An apparatus as recited in claim 2, in which the selecting means comprises a plurality of tube members each having an opening therein with a different cross-sectional area, where the operator arranges one of the tube members adjacent to the dispensing passageway to select the cross-sectional area of the discharge opening.
- 4. An apparatus as recited in claim 2, in which the selecting means comprises an outlet member having a plurality of outlet orifices formed therein, wherein:
- a) each of the outlet orifices has a different cross-sectional area; and
- b) the operator moves the outlet member relative to the dispensing passageway to align one of the outlet orifices with the dispensing passageway and thereby select the cross-sectional area of the discharge opening.
- 5. An apparatus as recited in claim 1, in which:
- a) the valve means comprises an actuator member; and
- b) the dispensing passageway is defined at least in part by the actuator member.
- 6. A method of applying spray texture to a surface in one of a plurality of predetermined texture patterns, comprising the steps of:
- a) providing a container filled with pressurized texture material;
- b) providing an actuator assembly defining an elongate dispensing passageway having a discharge opening;
- c) configuring the actuator assembly such that at least the discharge opening of the dispensing passageway has a cross-sectional area predetermined to correspond to a selected one of the predetermined texture patterns;
- d) providing a valve assembly for creating, in response to displacement of the actuator assembly into an open position, an exit path by which texture material may flow from the container into the dispensing passageway; wherein
- e) arranging the discharge opening adjacent to the surface;
- f) displacing the actuator assembly into the open position such that pressure within the container causes the texture material to pass through the dispensing passageway, out of the discharge opening, and onto the surface; and
- g) allowing the texture material to harden to form the selected one of the predetermined texture patterns.
- 7. A method as recited in claim 6, further comprising the step of selecting a cross-sectional area of the discharge opening to obtain another of the predetermined texture patterns.
