Claims
- 1. Polyamides derived from at least one of the following monomers: ##STR56## wherein R' and R" are independently hydrogen, straight chain or branched C.sub.1 to C.sub.10 alkyl and C.sub.6 to C.sub.20 aryl groups; at least one of R' or R" is hydrogen where amide bonds are formed; R.sub.3 is a phenyl, a CF.sub.3 or an alkyl group having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms; R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are independently hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy groups having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or aryl and aryloxy groups having from 6 to 20 carbon atoms; R.sub.6 is an alkyl having more than one carbon atom, an aryl or aryloxy having from 6 to 20 carbon atoms; and Ar is ##STR57## wherein X can be O, S, SO, SO.sub.2, ##STR58## CH.sub.2, an alkylene or alkylidene having from 2 to 8 carbon atoms, a cycloalkylene or cycloalkylidene having from 5 to 14 carbon atoms, or a phenylene group which may be substituted by an alkyl or alkoxy group having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, or by a halogen; the group Ar may also be selected from ##STR59## and wherein the subject monomers are used in an amount of at least 50 mole % based on the total monomers used.
- 2. Polyamides according to claim 1 wherein R.sub.3 is methyl.
- 3. Polyamides according to claims 1 or 2 which contain one or more of the following monomers
- H.sub.2 NAr'NH.sub.2,
- HOOC--Ar"--COOH
- where Ar' and Ar" are divalent aromatic radicals.
- 4. Polyamides according to claim 3, wherein Ar' is of the formulae ##STR60## or isomers thereof, and ##STR61## where X is as defined in claim 1; Ar" is Ar' or ##STR62## where R.sub.7 is a straight chain or branched C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl group, a halogen, or a C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 straight chain or branched alkoxy group and where Z can be 1, 2, or 3 and Ar.sub.2 is ##STR63## or isomers thereof, and ##STR64## where X is as defined in claim 1.
- 5. Polyamides according to claims 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 which contain up to 25 mole % (based on the total amine monomers) of a straight chain or branched aliphatic or of an arylaliphatic diamine.
- 6. Polyamides according to the claims 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 which contain up to 25 mole % (based on the total acid monomers) of a straight chain or branched aliphatic diacid or of an arylaliphatic diacid.
- 7. A polyamide comprising repeating units of the formula ##STR65##
- 8. A polyamide comprising repeating units of the formula ##STR66##
