Claims
- 1. Apparatus for collecting an exhalation sample from a ruminant animal comprising a housing having an inlet and an outlet; a flow path from the inlet to the outlet; a device for introducing the sample into the apparatus and a device for expelling the sample from the apparatus; wherein the device for introducing the sample into the apparatus includes a sensor for distinguishing between rumen gas and exhalation from the animal's lungs; and a device for facilitating flow of the sample into the apparatus, said flow facilitating device being operatively connected to said sensor whereby flow into the apparatus is facilitated when an exhalation from the animal's lungs is detected, but not when an emission of rumen gas is detected.
- 2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the housing includes a collapsible container in communication with the flow path and the flow facilitating device facilitates flow of the sample into that container.
- 3. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the collapsible container is adapted for the collection and temporary storage of the sample.
- 4. Apparatus according to claim 2 or 3, wherein the collapsible container comprises a length of plastic tubing, sealed at one end and in communication with the flow path at the other.
- 5. Apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the device for introducing the sample to the apparatus provides a reduced pressure within the housing in a region surrounding the collapsible container.
- 6. Apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the reduced pressure causes the collapsible container to inflate and thus facilitates the flow of exhalation through the inlet means and into the collecting apparatus.
- 7. Apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the device for expelling the sample from the apparatus produces an increased pressure within the housing in the region surrounding the collapsible container thereby expelling the sample from the apparatus through the outlet means.
- 8. Apparatus according to claim 7, which further comprises a device for controlling temperature.
- 9. Apparatus according to claim 6, which further comprises a device for controlling temperature.
- 10. Apparatus according to claim 5, wherein the device for expelling the sample from the apparatus produces an increased pressure within the housing in the region surrounding the collapsible container thereby expelling the sample from the apparatus through the outlet means.
- 11. Apparatus according to claim 10, which further comprises a device for controlling temperature.
- 12. Apparatus according to claim 4, which further comprises a device for controlling temperature.
- 13. Apparatus according to claim 5, which further comprises a device for controlling temperature.
- 14. Apparatus according to claim 2 or 3, wherein the device for introducing the sample to the apparatus produces a reduced pressure within the housing in a region surrounding the collapsible container.
- 15. Apparatus according to claim 14, which further comprises a device for controlling temperature.
- 16. Apparatus according to claim 14, wherein the reduced pressure causes the collapsible container to inflate and thus facilitates the flow of exhalation through the inlet means and into the collecting apparatus.
- 17. Apparatus according to claim 16, wherein the device for expelling the sample from the apparatus produces an increased pressure within the housing in the region surrounding the collapsible container thereby expelling the sample from the apparatus through the outlet means.
- 18. Apparatus according to claim 17, which further comprises a device for controlling temperature.
- 19. Apparatus according to claim 16, which further comprises a device for controlling temperature.
- 20. Apparatus according to claim 14, wherein the device for expelling the sample from the apparatus produces an increased pressure within the housing in the region surrounding the collapsible container thereby expelling the sample from the apparatus through the outlet means.
- 21. Apparatus according to claim 20, which further comprises a device for controlling temperature.
- 22. Apparatus according to any one of claim 1, 2 or 3, which further comprises a device for controlling temperature.
- 23. Apparatus according to any one of claim 1, 2 or 3, which is adapted to form part of an animal condition monitor.
- 24. Apparatus according to any one of claim 1, 2 or 3, which is portable.
