- 6. The combination of claim 5 wherein the suturable covering is dacron velour.
- 7. The combination of claim 1 wherein the holder includes:
guide mounting means defining a surface against which the suture guide is tautly positioned by the releasable retaining means; and a handle coupled to the mounting means and formed to be gripped during the placement of sutures through the suture guide.
- 8. The combination of claim 7 wherein the guide mounting means has a shape selected to hold the length of suture guide in a predetermined configuration.
- 9. The combination of claim 8 wherein the configuration is a predetermined circumference.
- 10. The combination of claim 8 wherein the configuration is at least a portion of a predetermined circumference.
- 11. The combination of claim 8 wherein the configuration is substantially linear and has a predetermined dimension.
- 12. The combination of claim 8 wherein the configuration is curvilinear and has a predetermined dimension.
- 13. The combination of claim 2 wherein the handle is releasably connected to the guide mounting means.
- 14. The combination of claim 7 wherein the surface defined by the mounting means comprises an outwardly facing channel into which the suture guide is at least partially fitted.
- 15. The combination of claim 1 wherein the releasable retaining means comprises a tethering means for extendibly attaching the handle to the mounting means.
- 16. The suture guide and holder assembly of claim 15 wherein the tethering means comprises a lanyard having first and second ends, with one of the ends being connected to the handle and the other end being connected to the mounting means.
- 17. The suture guide and holder of claim 1 wherein the releasable retaining means comprises at least a first thread having two opposing ends, each selectively affixed to the mounting means, with a portion of the thread being passed through a portion of the suture guide.
- 18. The suture guide and holder assembly of claim 15 wherein the releasable retaining means comprises at least a first thread having two opposing ends, each selectively affixed to the mounting means, with a portion of the thread being passed through a portion of the suture guide.
- 19. The suture guide and holder assembly of claim 16 wherein said releasable retaining means comprises at least a first thread having two opposing ends, each selectively affixed to the mounting means, with a portion of the thread being passed through a portion of the suture guide.
- 20. A suture guide and holder assembly comprising:
a substantially flexible suture guide of predetermined length having a suturable covering; a rigid body defining a shaped surface against which the suture guide is releasably positioned along said predetermined length; releasable retaining means for tautly and releasably retaining the suture guide against the shaped surface; a handle detachably coupled to the body; and means for tethering the handle to the body.
- 21. The assembly of claim 20 wherein the suture guide is a substantially elongated, straight flexible member comprising a substantially flexible inner rib and a woven cloth covering encasing the rib.
- 22. The assembly of claim 20 wherein the tethering means comprises:
a spool of a length of filamentous material secured at one end to the body and at an opposite end to the handle wherein the spool is housed within a cavity in the body.
- 23. The assembly of claim 20 wherein the tethering means comprises a length of filamentous material attached at one end to the body and at an opposite end to the handle.
- 24. The assembly of claim 20 wherein the body is C-shaped.
- 25. The assembly of claim 20 wherein the shape of the body is lenticular and wherein the suture guide is positioned along the portion of the lenticular surface having the largest radius of curvature.
- 26. The assembly of claim 20 wherein the retaining means comprises at least one filamentous strand that selectively stitches together respective ends of the suture guide and is attached to the body.
- 27. The assembly of claim 20 wherein the body comprises a holder formed with an outwardly facing surface against which the suture guide is positioned, said surface including one or more depressions for receiving a portion of the suture guide, and wherein the releasable retaining means includes at least a first thread affixed at both ends to the holder with a first portion passing at least partially through the suture guide, with the thread ends being affixed to the holder to expose at least one further portion of the thread that, when dissected, allows the suture guide to be freely released from the holder, and
wherein the suture guide resumes free flexibility upon release from the holder.
- 28. The assembly of claim 22 wherein the holder comprising C-shaped body formed with an outwardly facing surface against which the suture guide is releasably affixed by the retaining means, said surface including one or more depressions for receiving a portion of the suture guide, and wherein the releasable retaining means includes at least a first thread affixed at both ends to the holder with a first portion passing at least partially through the suture guide, with the ends of the thread being affixed to the holder to expose a second portion of said thread that, when cut in two, subdivides said thread into two pieces, each affixed at one end to the holder, with at least one of the pieces defining the first portion being freely withdrawable from the suture guide to release the suture guide from the holder.
- 29. The suture guide and holder assembly of claim 20 wherein said suture guide comprises a flexible rib encased within a woven fabric covering.
