Claims
- 1. An apparatus for use in applying write signals for driving a write head to effect writing information to a memory device; said write signals including a first write signal and a second write signal; the apparatus comprising:
(a) a current directing circuit; said current directing circuit receiving said write signals; said current directing circuit directing a write current to establish a write voltage across said write head in a first excursion toward a first polarity in response to said first write signal and directing said write current to establish said write voltage across said write head in a second excursion toward a second polarity substantially opposite said first polarity in response to said second write signal; said first excursion and said second excursion occurring about a common mode voltage; (b) a voltage drop control unit coupled with a supply voltage and with said current directing circuit at at least one connection locus for establishing said common mode voltage substantially equal with said supply voltage less a voltage drop; and (c) a switching unit coupled with said voltage drop control unit and with said connection locus; said switching unit cooperating with said voltage drop control unit to vary said voltage drop.
- 2. An apparatus for use in applying write signals for driving a write head to effect writing information to a memory device; said write signals including a first write signal and a second write signal as recited in claim 1 wherein said voltage drop unit comprises a plurality of impedance units coupled in an array between said supply voltage and said current directing circuit.
- 3. An apparatus for use in applying write signals for driving a write head to effect writing information to a memory device; said write signals including a first write signal and a second write signal as recited in claim 2 wherein said switching unit comprises at least one switch coupled with said plurality of impedance units; a first set of said plurality of impedance units being electrically connected to contribute to said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a first orientation; a second set of said plurality of impedance units being electrically connected to contribute to said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a second orientation.
- 4. An apparatus for use in applying write signals for driving a write head to effect writing information to a memory device; said write signals including a first write signal and a second write signal as recited in claim 1 wherein said switching unit comprises at least one switch coupled with said voltage drop control unit; said at least one switch and said voltage drop control unit effecting said cooperating to establish a first value for said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a first orientation; said at least one switch and said voltage drop control unit effecting said cooperating to establish a second value for said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a second orientation.
- 5. An apparatus for use in applying write signals for driving a write head to effect writing information to a memory device; said write signals including a first write signal and a second write signal as recited in claim 2 wherein said plurality of impedance units is a plurality of diode elements.
- 6. An apparatus for use in applying write signals for driving a write head to effect writing information to a memory device; said write signals including a first write signal and a second write signal as recited in claim 5 wherein said switching unit comprises at least one switch coupled with said plurality of diode units; a first set of said plurality of diode units being electrically connected to contribute to said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a first orientation; a second set of said plurality of diode units being electrically connected to contribute to said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a second orientation.
- 7. An apparatus for use in applying write signals for driving a write head to effect writing information to a memory device; said write signals including a first write signal and a second write signal as recited in claim 6 wherein said plurality of diode units is two diode units coupled in series and wherein said at least one switching unit is one switching unit coupled with said two diode units between said two diode units.
- 8. An apparatus for delivering write signals to a write head to effect writing information to a memory device; said write signals including a first write signal and a second write signal; the apparatus comprising:
(a) a responsive circuit coupled between an upper potential and a lower potential; said responsive circuit receiving said write signals; said responsive circuit establishing a first potential across said write head in response to said first write signal and establishing a second potential across said write head in response to said second write signal; said first write signal and said second write signal varying about a common mode voltage; (b) a voltage drop control unit coupled with said upper potential and with said responsive circuit at at least one connection locus for establishing said common mode voltage substantially equal with said first potential less a voltage drop; and (c) a switching unit coupled with said voltage drop control unit and with said connection locus; said switching unit cooperating with said voltage drop unit to vary said voltage drop
- 9. An apparatus for delivering write signals to a write head to effect writing information to a memory device as recited in claim 8 wherein said voltage drop unit comprises a plurality of impedance units coupled in an array between said first potential and said responsive circuit.
- 10. An apparatus for delivering write signals to a write head to effect writing information to a memory device as recited in claim 9 wherein said switching unit comprises at least one switch coupled with said plurality of impedance units; a first set of said plurality of impedance units being electrically connected to contribute to said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a first orientation; a second set of said plurality of impedance units being electrically connected to contribute to said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a second orientation.
- 11. An apparatus for delivering write signals to a write head to effect writing information to a memory device as recited in claim 8 wherein said switching unit comprises at least one switch coupled with said voltage drop control unit; said at least one switch and said voltage drop control unit effecting said cooperating to establish a first value for said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a first orientation; said at least one switch and said voltage drop control unit effecting said cooperating to establish a second value for said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a second orientation.
- 12. An apparatus for delivering write signals to a write head to effect writing information to a memory device as recited in claim 9 wherein said plurality of impedance units is a plurality of diode elements.
- 13. An apparatus for delivering write signals to a write head to effect writing information to a memory device as recited in claim 12 wherein said switching unit comprises at least one switch coupled with said plurality of diode units; a first set of said plurality of diode units being electrically connected to contribute to said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a first orientation; a second set of said plurality of diode units being electrically connected to contribute to said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a second orientation.
- 14. An apparatus for delivering write signals to a write head to effect writing information to a memory device as recited in claim 13 wherein said plurality of diode units is two diode units coupled in series and wherein said at least one switching unit is one switching unit coupled with said two diode units between said two diode units.
- 15. A method for applying write signals for driving a write head to effect writing information to a memory device; said write signals including a first write signal and a second write signal; the method comprising the steps of:
(a) in no particular order:
(1) providing a current directing circuit; said current directing circuit receiving said write signals; (2) providing a voltage drop control unit coupled with a supply voltage; and (3) providing a switching unit coupled with said voltage drop control unit and with said current detecting circuit; (b) operating said current directing circuit to direct a write current to establish a write voltage across said write head in a first excursion toward a first polarity in response to said first write signal and to direct said write current to establish said write voltage across said write head in a second excursion toward a second polarity substantially opposite said first polarity in response to said second write signal; said first excursion and said second excursion occurring about a common mode voltage; (c) coupling said voltage drop control unit with said current directing circuit at at least one connection locus to establish said common mode voltage substantially equal with said supply voltage less a voltage drop; and (d) operating said switching unit in cooperation with said voltage drop unit to vary said voltage drop.
- 16. A method for applying write signals for driving a write head to effect writing information to a memory device as recited in claim 15 wherein said voltage drop unit comprises a plurality of impedance units coupled in an array between said supply voltage and said current directing circuit.
- 17. A method for applying write signals for driving a write head to effect writing information to a memory device as recited in claim 16 wherein said switching unit comprises at least one switch coupled with said plurality of impedance units; a first set of said plurality of impedance units being electrically connected to contribute to said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a first orientation; a second set of said plurality of impedance units being electrically connected to contribute to said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a second orientation.
- 18. A method for applying write signals for driving a write head to effect writing information to a memory device as recited in claim 15 wherein said switching unit comprises at least one switch coupled with said voltage drop control unit; said at least one switch and said voltage drop control unit effecting said cooperating to establish a first value for said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a first orientation; said at least one switch and said voltage drop control unit effecting said cooperating to establish a second value for said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a second orientation.
- 19. A method for applying write signals for driving a write head to effect writing information to a memory device as recited in claim 16 wherein said plurality of impedance units is a plurality of diode elements.
- 20. An apparatus for use in applying write signals for driving a write head to effect writing information to a memory device; said write signals including a first write signal and a second write signal as recited in claim 19 wherein said switching unit comprises at least one switch coupled with said plurality of diode units; a first set of said plurality of diode units being electrically connected to contribute to said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a first orientation; a second set of said plurality of diode units being electrically connected to contribute to said voltage drop when said at least one switch is in a second orientation.
