Claims
- 1. A testing apparatus comprising:a first circuit including an electrical element; a second circuit in electrical communication with the first circuit, the second circuit arranged to bypass an electrical signal around the electrical element; and wherein the total gain of the electrical element and the second circuit is approximately unity for test signals that bypass the first circuit, reflect at an electrical device and return over the first circuit.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the electrical element is an amplifier.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 further comprising first and second couplers, wherein:the first circuit is electrically connected between the first and second couplers; and the second circuit is parallel to the first circuit and is electrically connected between the first and second couplers.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the second circuit includes an electrical element.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the electrical element in the second circuit is an amplifier.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 3 further comprising a filter arranged in series with the electrical element in the first circuit.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 wherein the filter is within the first circuit.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein the sum of the gains for the first coupler, the second coupler, the first circuit, and the second circuit is approximately 0 dB.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the electrical device is in electrical communication with the first circuit.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the electrical device is an antenna.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising a tower, the antenna being mounted on the tower, the first and second circuits being positioned proximal to the antenna.
- 12. A testing apparatus comprising:an electrical device; a first circuit configured to communicate a signal received from the electrical device, the first circuit including an electrical element; a second circuit in electrical communication with the first circuit, the second circuit arranged to bypass a test signal being communicated to the electrical device around the electrical element; and wherein the total gain of the electrical element and the second circuit is approximately unity for the test signals reflected by the electrical device.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the electrical element is an amplifier.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 12 further comprising first and second couplers, wherein:the first circuit is electrically connected between the first and second couplers; and the second circuit is parallel to the first circuit and is electrically connected between the first and second couplers.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14 wherein the second circuit includes an electrical element.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the electrical element in the second circuit is an amplifier.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 14 further comprising a filter arranged in series with the electrical element in the first circuit.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 wherein the filter is within the first circuit.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the sum of the gains for the first coupler, the second coupler, the first circuit, and the second circuit is approximately 0 dB.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the electrical device is an antenna.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 20 further comprising a tower, the antenna being mounted on the tower, the first and second circuits being positioned proximal to the antenna.
- 22. A testing apparatus comprising:an electrical device; first and second directional couplers electrically connected to the electrical device in series; a first circuit is electrically connected between the first and second directional couplers, the first circuit including an amplifier; a second circuit parallel to the first circuit and electrically connected between the first and second directional couplers; and wherein the total gain of the first coupler, the second coupler, the first circuit, and the second circuit is approximately 0 dB for signals provided for and reflected by the electrical device.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein the electrical device is an antenna.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 22 wherein the second circuit includes an amplifier.
- 25. The apparatus of claim 22 further comprising a filter arranged in series with the amplifier.
- 26. The apparatus of claim 25 wherein the filter is within the first circuit.
- 27. A method of testing an electrical device, wherein the electrical device is electrically connected to a network, the method comprising:transmitting a signal to the network; transmitting the signal from the network to the electrical device over a first path; and when the electrical device reflects the signal, returning the signal to the network over a second path, wherein the total gain of the signal from the first and second paths of the network is approximately unity.
- 28. The method of claim 27 further comprising amplifying the return signal as it flows along the second path.
- 29. The method of claim 28 further comprising amplifying the signal as it flows along the first path.
- 30. A testing apparatus comprising:an electrical device to receive signals; a test circuit to send test signals and receive return signals; a first circuit having a first amplifier; a second circuit having a second amplifier; a first directional coupler adapted to couple test signals from the test circuit to the second circuit and to couple the return signals in the first circuit to the test circuit; a second directional coupler adapted to coupled the test signals in the second circuit to the electrical device and couple return signals to the first circuit: and wherein the overall gain for a signal path including the first directional coupler, the second directional coupler, the first circuit and the second circuit is approximately unity.
- 31. The testing apparatus of claim 30 wherein the test signals sent by the base station are within the receiving band frequencies for the electrical device.
- 32. The testing apparatus of claim 30 further comprising a filter coupled between the second directional coupler and the second amplifier.
- 33. The testing apparatus of claim 30 herein the total gain of the electrical device and the second circuit is a predetermined level.
- 34. An antenna testing device comprising:an antenna for receiving a band of frequencies; a test circuit to send a test signal to the antenna and receive a return signal; a first circuit coupled between the antenna and the test circuit, the first circuit having a first amplifier coupled in series with a filter; a second circuit coupled to bypass the first circuit, the second circuit having a second amplifier; and wherein the first circuit is adapted so substantially all of the test signal from the test circuit within the band of frequencies is directed to the second circuit and substantially all of a return of the test signal from the antenna is directed to the test circuit.
- 35. The antenna testing device of claim 34 wherein the filter in the first circuit is coupled between the amplifier and the antenna.
- 36. The antenna testing device of claim 34 wherein the test signals sent by the test circuit are within the receiving band frequencies of the antenna.
- 37. The antenna testing device of claim 34 further comprising:a first directional coupler; and a second directional coupler, wherein the first directional coupler and the second directional coupler couple the second circuit to selectively bypass the first circuit.
- 38. The antenna testing device of claim 37 wherein the second directional coupler is adapted so substantially all of a signal in the second circuit is directed to the antenna and substantially all of a signal from the antenna is directed to the first circuit.
- 39. The antenna testing device of claim 37 wherein the sum of gains for the first directional coupler, the second directional coupler, the first circuit and the second circuit is approximately unity.
- 40. An antenna testing system comprising:an antenna to receive signals within a predetermined frequency band; a test circuit to provide a test signal within the frequency band of the antenna, the test circuit is remotely located from the antenna; an electrical network coupled between the antenna and the test circuit, wherein the electrical network selectively routes the test signal to the antenna and a return signal from the antenna to the test circuit; and a filter coupled between the antenna and the test circuit.
- 41. The antenna testing system of claim 40 wherein the electrical network comprises:a first circuit having a first amplifier; and a second circuit coupled in parallel with the first circuit, the second circuit having a second amplifier.
- 42. The antenna testing system of claim 41 wherein the filter is within the first circuit.
- 43. The antenna testing system of claim 41 wherein the electrical network further comprises:a first directional coupler coupled to direct substantially all test signals from the test circuit to the second circuit and direct substantially all signals in the first circuit to the test circuit; and a second directional coupler coupled to direct substantially all signals from the antenna to the first circuit and substantially all signals in the second circuit to the antenna.
- 44. The antenna testing system of claim 43 wherein the sum of the gains for the first directional coupler, the second directional coupler, the first circuit and the second circuit is approximately unity.
