Claims
- 1. An apparatus for mounting a device to a pipe, the pipe having a curved wall having an outer surface and a hole through the pipe wall at a position in the pipe wall, the apparatus comprising:
(a) a gasket conformable to the outer surface of the pipe wall adjacent the pipe wall hole, and having a gasket hole complementary to the pipe wall hole, (b) a mounting block,
having at least a part of one surface conformed to the outer surface of the pipe wall adjacent the pipe wall hole, having integral therewith on that at least a part of the one surface a projection shaped to engage the pipe wall hole such that the mounting block can be placed on the pipe over the gasket with the projection engaging the pipe wall hole, and having an aperture extending through the mounting block and projection, the end of the aperture furthest from the projection being adapted to receive the device, such that, when the device is received onto the mounting block and the mounting block is placed on the pipe over the gasket with the projection engaging the hole in the pipe wall, there is a continuous open passage between the interior of the pipe and the device; and (c) a fastener for securing the mounting block onto the pipe over the gasket such that the projection engages the pipe wall hole.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 where the device is an injector or a sensor.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1 where the pipe is a portion of an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine and the device is an injector or sensor of an emissions control system.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a first shield retained between the mounting block and the device when the device is received onto the mounting block.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 5 where the first shield is a metal plate.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 6 where the metal is aluminum, an aluminum alloy, mild steel, or stainless steel.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a second shield adapted to protect the device when the apparatus is mounted to the pipe and the device received on the end of the aperture in the mounting block furthest from the projection.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 where the end of the aperture in the mounting block furthest from the projection is adapted to receive the device by being internally threaded to receive a cooperatively externally threaded portion of the device.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 where the mounting block comprises:
(b1) a plate having upper and lower faces, at least a central portion of which is conformed to the outer surface of the pipe wall with the lower face facing the pipe wall, and (b2) a tube sealingly secured to the plate, extending perpendicular to the plane of the plate below the lower face of the plate and above the upper face of the plate, the extension below the lower face of the plate being the projection engaging the pipe wall hole, and the end of the tube in the extension above the upper face of the plate being adapted to receive the device.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 where the tube is cylindrical.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10 where the tube is secured to the plate by welding.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 9 where the plate and the tube are formed as a single unit.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12 where the plate and the tube are formed as a single unit by casting or forging.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 1 where the fastener comprises a releasably engageable band adapted to wrap around the pipe.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 1 where the fastener comprises a band clamp with a tightening screw.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 1 where the fastener comprises a bolt, a saddle clamp, or a U-bolt.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 1 where the mounting body further comprises integral therewith on that at least a part of the one surface a locating peg engageable with a second hole in the pipe wall.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17 comprising at least two locating pegs.
- 19. An apparatus for mounting an injector or sensor of an emissions control system to a pipe of the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, the pipe having a curved wall having an outer surfaces and a hole through the pipe wall at a position in the pipe wall, the apparatus comprising:
(a) a gasket conformable to the outer surface of the pipe wall adjacent the pipe wall hole, and having a gasket hole complementary to the pipe wall hole, (b) a mounting block comprising:
(b1) a plate having upper and lower faces, at least a central portion of which is conformed to the outer surface of the pipe wall with the lower face facing the pipe wall, and (b2) a tube sealingly secured to the plate, extending perpendicular to the plane of the plate below the lower face of the plate and above the upper face of the plate, the extension below the lower face of the plate engaging the pipe wall hole, and the end of the tube in the extension above the upper face of the plate being adapted to receive the device, such that, when the device is received onto the mounting block and the mounting block is placed on the pipe over the gasket with the projection engaging the hole in the pipe wall, there is a continuous open passage between the interior of the pipe and the device; and (c) a fastener for securing the mounting block onto the pipe over the gasket such that the extension below the lower surface of the plate engages the pipe wall hole.
- 20. A method for mounting a device to a pipe, the pipe having a curved wall having an outer surface, the method comprising:
(a) cutting a hole in the pipe wall; (b) fastening the apparatus of claim 1 to the pipe; and (c) receiving the device onto the end of the aperture furthest from the projection.
