Claims
- 1. An apparatus, comprising:
- a magnetic encoder adapted to encode a magnetic area situated on a card assembly passing through said apparatus, said card assembly comprising:
- a carrier sheet having a cavity within a surface; and
- an information card situated within said cavity and having said magnetic area disposed thereon.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a xerographic printer means for xerographically printing information on said information card during passage through said apparatus.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a decoder means for decoding a bar code situated on said carrier sheet of said card assembly.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein said magnetic encoder encodes the magnetic area, based on the decoded bar code generated by said decoder means.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said information card comprises a substantially rigid material with a printable surface layer for receiving xerographic print.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said card assembly further comprises a suspension sheet affixed to said carrier sheet and wherein said carrier sheet comprises an aperture, said suspension sheet and said aperture collectively forming said cavity.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, further comprising a printer.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein said suspension sheet comprises transparent acetate material.
- 9. An apparatus for receiving a card assembly having a carrier sheet with a cavity and an information card situated within said cavity, comprising a magnetic encoder for encoding a magnetic strip situated on the information card of the card assembly.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9, further comprising a decoder means for decoding a bar code situated on the carrier sheet of the card assembly.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 9, further comprising a printer.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 9, further comprising:
- a bar code disposed on the card assembly; and
- a decoder disposed to read the bar code, to generate a decoded bar code signal;
- said magnetic encoder encoding the magnetic strip, based on the decoded bar code signal from said decoder.
- 13. A method, comprising the steps of:
- passing a card assembly through an apparatus, said card assembly comprising a carrier sheet having a cavity and an information card within said cavity; and
- magnetically encoding a magnetic region situated on said information card as said card assembly passes through said apparatus.
- 14. The method of claim 13, further comprising the step of xerographically printing information on said information card as said card assembly passes through said apparatus.
- 15. The method of claim 13, further comprising the step of decoding a bar code situated on the card assembly as the card assembly passes through said apparatus.
- 16. The method of claim 13, further comprising the step of printing information on the information card as the card assembly passes through said apparatus.
- 17. An apparatus for performing any one of the methods of claims 13 through 16.
- 18. The method of claim 13, further comprising the steps of:
- disposing a bar code on said card assembly; and
- decoding said bar code to generate a decoded bar code signal;
- said step of magnetically encoding the magnetic region being performed based on the decoded bar code signal.
- 19. An apparatus for placing information on an information card assembly, said card assembly comprising a carrier sheet defining a cavity therein and an information card releasably attached to said carrier sheet, said apparatus defining a path of travel for said card assembly, and further comprising a magnetic encoder disposed along said path of travel.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 19, further comprising means for printing onto said card assembly.
- 21. The apparatus of claim 19, further comprising:
- a bar code situated on said card assembly; and
- a decoder disposed along said path of travel, to generate a decoded bar code signal based on the bar code;
- said magnetic encoder encoding a magnetic region of said information card, based on the decoded bar code signal.
- 22. An apparatus for placing information on an information card assembly, said card assembly comprising a carrier sheet defining an aperture therein, a suspension sheet attached to said carrier sheet so that said suspension sheet overlaps at least a portion of said aperture, and an information card releasably attached to said suspension sheet, said apparatus defining a path of travel for said card assembly, and comprising a magnetic encoder disposed along said path of travel.
- 23. The apparatus of claim 22, further comprising means for printing onto said card assembly.
- 24. The apparatus of claim 22, further comprising:
- a bar code situated on said card assembly; and
- said magnetic encoder encoding a magnetic region of said information card, based on the decoded bar code signal.
- 25. A method of placing printed information and magnetically encoded information onto an information card assembly, said information card assembly comprising a carrier sheet defining a cavity therein and an information card releasably attached to said carrier sheet and including a magnetically sensitive area thereon, using a means for printing onto said card assembly defining a path of travel and including a means for magnetically encoding said magnetically sensitive area disposed along said path of travel, said method comprising the steps of passing said card assembly along said path of travel, printing said printed information onto said card assembly and magnetically encoding said magnetically encoded information onto said card assembly.
- 26. The method of claim 25, wherein said information card assembly includes a bar code, and wherein said step of magnetically encoding is performed based on information encoded in the bar code.
- 27. A method of placing printed information and magnetically encoded information onto an information card assembly, said information card assembly comprising a carrier sheet defining an aperture therein, a suspension sheet attached to said carrier sheet so that said suspension sheet overlaps at least a portion of said aperture and an information card releasably attached to said suspension sheet, using a printer defining a path of travel and including a magnetic encoder disposed along said path of travel, said method comprising the steps of passing said card assembly along said path of travel, printing said printed information onto said card assembly and magnetically encoding said magnetically encoded information onto said card assembly.
- 28. The method of claim 27, wherein said card assembly includes a bar code, and wherein said step of magnetically encoding is performed based on information encoded in the bar code.
