Claims
- 1. An apparatus for boring and assembling a pallet, the pallet having two or more main components and two or more cross components, resulting in four or more intersections of the main components and the cross components, comprising:
a means for loading an assembly jig with the two or more main components and the two or more cross components wherein said assembly jig holds the main components and the cross components in proper aligned position, thereby forming an incomplete pallet having a bottom and a top; a means for simultaneously boring two or more intersections of the main components and the cross components of said incomplete pallet in said assembly jig, thereby forming a bored pallet having a bore in at least two intersections; and a means for delivering said assembly jig containing said bored pallet to a bolting table.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising:
a means for returning said assembly jig to said means for loading an assembly jig when the pallet is removed from said assembly jig prior to said assembly jig being returned.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said means for delivering said assembly jig containing said bored pallet to a bolting table comprises a first conveyor system moving in a longitudinal direction from said means for simultaneously boring each intersection to said means for delivering said assembly jig containing said bored pallet to said bolting table, and said means for returning said assembly jig comprises a second conveyor system positioned in a vertical plane in parallel to said first conveyor system, moving in a longitudinal direction from said bolting table to said means for loading said assembly jig.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said first conveyor system and said second conveyor system are arranged vertically.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising:
a means for simultaneously bolting the main components to the cross components of said bored pallet with a plurality of bolts and pallet nuts, wherein one said bolt is inserted and fastened with one said pallet nut, thereby creating the pallet.
- 6. The apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said means for simultaneously bolting comprises:
a bolting table for receiving said bored pallet; a means for pushing simultaneously a plurality of pallet nuts into said bores of said bored pallet, wherein one said pallet nut is inserted into one said bore of said bored pallet; a means for preventing said pallet nuts from rotating when bolts are inserted and tightened into said bores of said bored pallet; and a means for retracting said means for pushing.
- 7. The apparatus according to claim 6, wherein said assembly jig containing said bored pallet is lowered onto said bolting table.
- 8. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said assembly jig comprises two or more fixed sides and two or more movable sides.
- 9. The apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said assembly jig comprises a plurality of holes for permitting a plurality of drill bits to penetrate through said assembly jig to said two or more main components and said two or more cross components such that one said drill bit penetrates one said hole.
- 10. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said means for simultaneously boring is a boring machine having a table for simultaneously drilling bores in said incomplete pallet in said assembly jig, wherein said boring machine drills said bores from the bottom of said incomplete pallet.
- 11. The apparatus according to claim 9, wherein said means for simultaneously boring further comprises:
a first set of pin stops for stopping the forward motion of said assembly jig; a plurality of air cylinders for advancing said assembly jig into said boring machine; and a second set of stops for sliding said assembly jig within said boring machine.
- 12. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein said pin stops are adjustable.
- 13. The apparatus according to claim 11, wherein said stops are fixed in position.
- 14. The apparatus according to claim 1, wherein each said bore has three diameters.
- 15. The apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a means for collecting dust during the boring of the intersections of said incomplete pallet.
- 16. A pallet, comprising:
two or more main components and two or more cross components, resulting in four or more intersections of the main components and the cross components; a plurality of bores located at said four or more intersections of the main components and the cross components; and a plurality of bolts inserted through said bores and secured by a plurality of pallet nuts, such that said pallet nuts and said bolts are countersunk below the surface of said two or more main components and said two or more cross components.
- 17. The pallet according to claim 16, wherein said two or more main components and said two or more cross components fit together flush.
- 18. The pallet according to claim 16, wherein said two or more cross components are overlaid with a panel board.
- 19. A method of boring and assembling a pallet having two or more main components and two or more cross components, resulting in four or more intersections of the main components and the cross components, comprising the steps of:
(a) filling an assembly jig located at a pre-boring station with two or more main components and two or more cross components to form an incomplete pallet; (b) simultaneously boring the intersections of the main components and the cross components of said incomplete pallet, resulting in a bored pallet; (c) delivering said assembly jig containing said bored pallet to a bolting table; and (d) bolting the main components to the cross components of said bored pallet, resulting in a pallet.
- 20. The method of boring and assembling a pallet according to claim 19, further comprising the steps of:
(e) removing the pallet from said assembly jig; and (f) returning said assembly jig to said pre-boring station.
- 21. The method of boring and assembling a pallet according to claim 19, wherein said step
(b) bores the intersections from the bottom of said incomplete pallet.
- 22. A pallet produced by the method of claim 19.
- 23. A drill bit, comprising:
a drill bit shaft; a first bit means for boring a hole of a first diameter; a second bit means for boring a hole of a second diameter; and a third bit means for boring a hole of a third diameter, where said first bit means, said second bit means and said third bit means are attached to said drill bit shaft.
- 24. The drill bit according to claim 23, wherein said third bit means is rigidly attached to said drill bit shaft by using two or more screws.
