Claims
- 1. An apparatus for coating an electromagnetic coil with an insulating catalyzed resin material wherein the viscosity and the curing rate of the catalyzed resin material are affected by heat, the apparatus comprising:
- a. a catalyzed resin material delivery system comprising a pump for displacing the catalyzed resin material and a conduit coupled to the pump for delivering the catalyzed resin material onto the coil at a coating station;
- b. a support fixture for supporting the coil adjacent to the material delivery system and for moving the coil to receive the material;
- c. means for coupling the coil to a source of electrical current;
- d. means for applying an electrical current to the coil to preheat the coil prior to delivery of the catalyzed resin material onto the coil, to maintain the coil at a first predetermined temperature during delivery of the catalyzed resin material onto the coil and to further heat the coil to a second predetermined temperature to cure the catalyzed resin material in the coil; and
- e. control means for controlling the pump for supplying the catalyzed resin material to the coating station, for controlling the movement of the coil, and for controlling the heating of the coil.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the material delivery system includes a nozzle mounted for movement on a frame, the nozzle being coupled to the pump via the conduit.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the control means further comprises:
- a. nozzle control means for moving and positioning the nozzle; and
- b. support fixture control means for moving and positioning the support fixture,
- wherein the nozzle control means and the support fixture control means under the control of the control means operate in concert to coordinate the relative movements and positions of the nozzle and the support fixture to insure the catalyzed resin material is uniformly applied to the coil.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the control means further comprises:
- a. means for calculating a volume of voids in the coil; and
- b. volume dispensing means for controlling the pump for dispensing the calculated volume of catalyzed resin material onto the coil.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein control means further comprises:
- a. timing means for timing a first waiting time during which the catalyzed resin material is being dispensed onto the coil and for timing a second waiting time during which the catalyzed resin material is not being dispensed onto the coil.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the means for heating includes an alternating current source which when connected to the coil causes the coil to vibrate to promote penetration of the catalyzed resin material.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus further comprises means connected to the delivery system for preheating the catalyzed resin material to approximately the first predetermined temperature before delivering the catalyzed resin material onto the coil.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus further comprises temperature sensing means, connected to the control means, for sensing a parameter representative of the temperature of the coil and communicating an indication of the temperature to the control means so that the control means can control the means for applying electrical current to the coil to maintain the coil at the first temperature during delivery of the catalyzed resin material, can raise the coil to the second temperature during curing of the catalyzed resin material and can limit the current in the coil when the coil reaches a third temperature.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the control means further comprises:
- a. calculating means for calculating a volume of voids in the coil and
- b. volume dispensing means for controlling the pumps for dispensing that volume of catalyzed resin material onto the coil.
- 10. An apparatus for coating the stator coil of a wound stator core of an electric motor with an insulating catalyzed resin material, wherein the viscosity and the curing rate of the catalyzed resin material are affected by heat and wherein the wound stator core has an axis and includes an iron stator core with slots therein for containing the stator coils and wherein the stator coils protrude axially from both ends of the slots of the iron stator core to form coil heads with interstitial windows between the coil heads, the apparatus comprising:
- a. a catalyzed resin material dispensing system comprising:
- i. a nozzle mounted for movement on a frame; and
- ii. a controllable pressure source for supplying the catalyzed resin material to the nozzle via a conduit;
- b. a movable support fixture for supporting and moving the stator coil, the movable support fixture being disposed beneath the nozzle;
- c. heating means for heating the stator coil to a first temperature for dispensing the catalyzed resin from the nozzle onto the stator coil and to a second temperature to cure the catalyzed resin material in the stator coil, the heating means connected to the movable support and including a controllable source of current connected to the stator coil;
- d. control means connected to the catalyzed resin material dispensing system, the movable support fixture and the heating means, the control means controlling the pressure source for supplying catalyzed resin material to the nozzle, for controlling the movement of the nozzle, for controlling the movement of the support fixture, and for controlling the heating of the stator coil; and
- e. means for heating the conduit to preheat the catalyzed resin material to approximately the first temperature before the catalyzed resin material is dispensed onto the stator coil.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the controllable current source is an alternating current source which when connected to the stator coil causes the stator coil to vibrate to promote penetration of the catalyze resin material.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the apparatus further comprises temperature sensing means, connected to the control means, for sensing the temperature of the stator coil and communicating an indication of the temperature to the control means so that the control means can control the controllable source of current supplied to the stator coil to maintain the stator coil at the first temperature during dispensing of the catalyzed resin material, can raise the stator coil to the second temperature during curing of the catalyzed resin material and can limit the current in the stator coil when the coil reaches a third temperature.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the control means further comprises:
- a. nozzle control means for moving and positioning the nozzle; and
- b. support fixture control means for moving and positioning the support fixture,
- wherein the nozzle control means and the support fixture control means under the control of the control means operate in concert to coordinate the relative movements and positions of the nozzle and the support fixture to insure the catalyzed resin material is uniformly applied to the stator coil.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the control means further comprises:
- a. calculating means for calculating a volume of voids in the coil and
- b. volume dispensing means for controlling the pressure source for dispensing that volume of catalyzed resin material onto the stator coil.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein control means further comprises:
- a. timing means for timing a first waiting time during which the catalyzed resin material is being dispensed onto the coil and for timing a second waiting time during which the catalyzed resin material is not being dispensed onto the stator coil.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein control means further comprises:
- a. timing means for timing a first waiting time during which the catalyzed resin material is being dispensed onto the coil and for timing a second waiting time during which the catalyzed resin material is not being dispensed onto the stator coil.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the control means further comprises:
- a. calculating means for calculating a volume of voids in the coil and
- b. volume dispensing means for controlling the pressure source for dispensing that volume of catalyzed resin material onto the stator coil.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the support fixture further comprises:
- a. yoke means connected to rotation drive means for rotating the yoke means about an axis of rotation;;
- b. clamp means carried by the yoke means for holding the wound stator core on the support fixture so that the axis of the wound stator core aligned with the axis of rotation;
- c. flip drive means carried by the yoke means for flipping the wound stator core end for end within the yoke; and
- d. tilt means for tilting the support fixture in order to position the axis of the wound stator core with respect to vertical.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the nozzle comprises a plurality of nozzles.
- 20. An apparatus for coating an electromagnetic coil with an insulating catalyzed resin material, wherein the viscosity and the curing rate of the catalyzed resin material are affected by heat, the apparatus comprising:
- a. a catalyzed resin material delivery system comprising:
- i. a nozzle mounted for movement on a frame; and
- ii. a controllable pressure source for supplying the catalyzed resin material to the nozzle via a conduit;
- b. a support fixture for supporting the coil adjacent to the material delivery system and for moving the coil to receive the material;
- c. heating means for heating the coil to a first temperature for dispensing the catalyzed resin material onto the coil and to a second temperature to cure the catalyzed resin material in the coil, the heating means connected to the support fixture and including a controllable source of current connected to the stator coil; and
- d. control means for controlling the pressure source for supplying the catalyzed resin material to the nozzle, for controlling the movement of the coil and for controlling the heating of the coil, the control means including calculating means for calculating a volume of voids in the coil and volume dispensing means for controlling the pressure source for dispensing that volume of catalyzed resin material onto the coil.
