Claims
- 1. An apparatus for compensating variances in a circuit used for applying airway pressure to a patient's airway, comprising:
- a source of breathable gas provided under a controllable pressure;
- a pneumatic circuit connection supplying the breathable gas from the source to the patient's airway, wherein the pneumatic circuit connection exhibits a connection variance;
- a sensor disposed proximal to the pneumatic circuit connection for ascertaining a circuit characteristic and producing a signal value representative thereof;
- a memory storing a look-up table containing empirical values corresponding to known variances of pneumatic circuit connections;
- a signal processor receiving and comparing the signal value with the empirical values to ascertain a deviation value; and
- a controller connected to the signal processor and the source of breathable gas, wherein the controller adjusts the source in accordance with the deviation value.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the breathable gas includes ambient air.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the source of breathable gas includes a blower.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the pneumatic circuit connection includes a pneumatic hose connecting the patient to the source of breathable gas.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the controller includes a pressure controller.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the sensor includes a pressure sensor.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the circuit characteristic includes a pressure measurement.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the known variances of pneumatic circuit connections include pressure drop data of a plurality of pneumatic hoses.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the sensor includes a flow sensor.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the signal processor includes a microprocessor.
- 11. A method for compensating variances in a circuit used for applying positive pressure to a patient's airway, comprising the steps of:
- providing a source of breathable gas under a controllable pressure;
- providing a pneumatic circuit connection that carries the breathable gas from the source to the patient's airway, wherein the pneumatic circuit connection includes a variance;
- ascertaining a circuit characteristic and producing a signal value representative thereof;
- providing a memory storing a look-up table containing empirical values corresponding to known variances of pneumatic circuit connections;
- comparing the signal value with the empirical values to obtain a deviation value; and
- controlling the source of breathable gas in accordance with the deviation value.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein the step of adjusting the breathable gas includes adjusting an output pressure of the source.
- 13. The method of claim 11, wherein the pneumatic circuit connection includes a pneumatic hose.
- 14. The method of claim 11, wherein the source of breathable gas includes a blower.
- 15. The method of claim 11, wherein the step of ascertaining a circuit characteristic includes measuring a pressure drop.
- 16. The method of claim 11, wherein the step of controlling the source further comprises the steps of retrieving a dead zone range from memory and adjusting the source if the deviation value is outside of the dead zone range.
- 17. An apparatus for compensating variances in a circuit used for applying positive pressure to a patient's airway comprising:
- a source of breathable gas provided under a controllable pressure;
- a pneumatic circuit connection supplying the breathable gas from the source to the patient's airway, wherein the pneumatic circuit connection exhibits a pressure variance;
- a pressure sensor disposed proximal to the pneumatic circuit connection for ascertaining a circuit pressure and producing a signal value representative thereof;
- a memory storing a look-up table containing empirical values corresponding to known pressure variances of pneumatic circuit connections;
- a signal processor receiving and comparing the signal value with the empirical value to ascertain a deviation value; and
- a controller connected to the signal processor and the source of breathable gas, wherein the controller adjusts the pressure output of the source in accordance with the deviation value.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the pneumatic circuit connection includes a hose.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the connection variance includes a pressure drop in the hose.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein the source includes a blower having a motor whose speed is adjusted by the controller.
