Claims
- 1. An apparatus for dispensing sheets of web material of predetermined length from a supply of the web material comprising:
- a housing,
- means for storing the supply of web material in the housing, and
- separating means arranged in the housing for separating a sheet of the web material from the remainder thereof in response to a user of the apparatus pulling from the housing the free end of web material in the storing means,
- the separating means comprising a roller mounted for rotation in the housing, means for guiding the free end of the web over the roller and into frictional driving engagement therewith as it is pulled from the housing, and cutting means arranged on the surface of the roller to provide a cutting line at least part of which extends at an angle other than zero to the axis of the roller such that when a sheet of the web is withdrawn by the user a portion of the leading edge of the remainder of the web is simultaneously advanced outside the housing solely as a direct result of such withdrawal to be available for gripping by a subsequent user.
- 2. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the cutting means comprises a fixed blade thereon extending substantially over the whole width of the roller and projecting from its surface.
- 3. An apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the blade is disposed helically over the roller surface.
- 4. An apparatus according to claim 3, wherein the blade extends helically with a left-handed thread over one half of the roller and with a right-handed thread over the other half of the roller.
- 5. An apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the blade is disposed partially parallel with the axis and partially normal to the axis of the roller.
- 6. An apparatus according to claim 2 including a backing roller associated with the bladed roller, the backing roller being formed with a groove matching the blade arrangement.
- 7. An apparatus for dispensing sheets of web material of predetermined length from a supply of the web material comprising:
- a housing,
- means for storing the supply of web material in the housing, and
- separating means arranged in the housing for separating a sheet of the web material from the remainder thereof in response to a user of the apparatus pulling from the housing the free end of web material in the storing means,
- the separating means comprising a roller mounted for rotation in the housing, means for guiding the free end of the web over the roller and into frictional driving engagement therewith as it is pulled from the housing, and cutting means arranged on the surface of the roller to provide a cutting line at least part of which extends at an angle other than zero to the axis of the roller such that when a sheet of the web is withdrawn by the user a portion of the leading edge of the remainder of the web is simultaneously advanced outside the housing solely as a direct result of such withdrawal to be available for gripping by a subsequent user, and
- the cutting means comprising a blade arrangement including a plurality of blade portions disposed offset in relation to one another in the peripheral direction of the roller, each of the blade portions having associated therewith a first lever pivotably mounted inside the bladed roller on a wall thereof, and an operating device including cam members arranged so that when the roller rotates the blade portions are controlled by the cam members to emerge through slots formed in the roller surface.
- 8. An apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the blade portions are arranged to be controlled by the cam members to emerge in succession through the slots in the roller surface.
- 9. An apparatus according to claim 7 wherein the roller is mounted on a spindle and the operating devices comprise cam discs attached to the roller spindle.
- 10. An apparatus according to claim 7 wherein each of said first levers is resiliently biased by means of a spring operative between it and the inside wall of the roller.
- 11. An apparatus according to claim 7, wherein the operating device comprises a plurality of second levers pivotally mounted eccentrically of a spindle of the roller and articulated to a respective first lever.
