Claims
- 1. Apparatus for growing homogeneous crystals from a hydrothermal growing solution, said crystals exhibiting retrograde solubility, comprising a vertically elongated growing tank in the interior of which crystals are to be grown to desired size from said growing solution, and an external tank for retaining growing solution, means connecting said tank and said growing tank so that growing solution can be forced from said external tank to said growing tank and removed therefrom, a hollow tube extending from a position at the top of said growing tank through the interior thereof to a location near the bottom thereof, means forcing growing solution from said external tank through said connecting means to said tube, and thereafter through said tube to the bottom of said growing tank to fill said tank interior to an appropriate level, and means forcing said growing solution from said tank into said tube and from said tube to said connecting means and said external tank, whereby said growing solution can be supplied to said growing tank and removed therefrom without opening said growing tank to discharge the contents thereof with a degree of rapidity such as to minimize dissolving of said crystals as said growing solution cools due to said retrograde solubility of said crystals.
- 2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, in which said tube extends substantially along the vertical axis of said growing tank.
- 3. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, in which said growing tank has holders spaced vertically from each other within said tank, and a plurality of seed crystals hanging from said holders.
- 4. Apparatus as claimed in claim 3, in which said growing tank has upper and lower sections and said vertically spaced holders and seed crystals are located in said lower section of said growing tank.
- 5. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, in which said growing tank has vertically spaced trays for holding crystal forming materials.
- 6. Apparatus as claimed in claim 5, in which said growing tank has upper and lower sections and said trays are located in upper section of said growing tank.
- 7. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, in which said growing tank is separated into upper and lower sections by a baffle past which growing solution may pass.
- 8. Apparatus for growing homogeneous crystals from a hydrothermal growing solution, said crystals exhibiting retrograde solubility, comprising a vertically elongated growing tank in which crystals of desired size are grown from a growing solution, said tank having an elongated hollow tube extending from the upper end thereof down through the tank to a position adjacent the bottom of the interior of said tank, means for supporting holders for crystal materials, said supporting means extending in substantially vertical stacks through the interior of said tank, said holders being supported by said supporting means in spaced relationship to each other, said tube extending substantially along the vertical axis of said growing tank and being spaced from said holders, and means for supplying a growing solution into the upper end of said tube, through said tube to the bottom of said growing tank and thereafter up into said growing tank to a desired level therewithin and into contact with said crystal materials on said holders, so that said growing solution may be added to said tank and rapidly withdrawn therefrom without such a change in temperature as will markedly solubilize crystals formed due to the retrograde solubility of said crystals.
- 9. Apparatus as claimed in claim 8, in which said holders support seed crystals.
- 10. Apparatus as claimed in claim 9, in which said seed crystal holders are substantially annular in shape and form an annular space between said holders and said tube.
- 11. Apparatus as claimed in claim 8, in which said holders support crystal forming materials.
- 12. Apparatus as claimed in claim 11, in which said material holders are in the form of trays that form a substantially annular opening between said trays and said tube.
- 13. Apparatus as claimed in claim 8, in which said growing tank is separated into upper and lower sections by a baffle past which growing solution passes.
- 14. Apparatus as claimed in claim 8, in which said supporting means includes at least one post extending substantially parallel to said tube within the interior said growing tank, said holders being attached to said post.
- 15. Apparatus as claimed in claim 14, in which said post is attached to the interior of said growing tank at the base thereof.
- 16. Apparatus as claimed in claim 8, in which said tube is removably attached to said growing tank at the top thereof.
- 17. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, further including a heat exchanger as part of said means connecting said external tank and said growing tank, said heat exchanger being used for the preparation and presaturation of said growing solution transported from said external tank to said growing tank.
- 18. Apparatus as claimed in claim 9, in which said seed crystal holders are formed from PTFE.
- 19. Apparatus as claimed in claim 11, in which said material holders are formed from PTFE.
