Claims
- 1. Apparatus for the manufacture of mats of aligned lignocellulosic particles employed in the manufacture of comminuted pressed lignocellulosic products having directional qualities, comprising:
- an electrically insulative transfer surface for receiving a multitude of discrete lignocellulosic particles thereon to form a mat thereof;
- an electrically conductive mat-receiving surface maintained at ground potential positioned adjacent the discharge end of the transfer surface to receive the mat;
- means for establishing and maintaining a directional electric field immediately above the transfer surface to align the particles making up the mat; and
- means for transferring the aligned mat from the transfer surface to the mat-receiving surface maintained at ground potential.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the means for transferring the aligned mat to the mat-receiving surface includes means suspending the mat of the aligned particles above the transfer surface within the generated electric field.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the means for suspending the mat includes means imparting vibratory motion to the transfer surface sufficient to suspend the mat of aligned particles thereon.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the means for suspending the mat of aligned particles includes a planar, electrically insulative, porous surface, and means providing a gas under pressure through the porous surface to provide a gas film between the porous surface and the mat of aligned particles sufficient to suspend the mat of aligned particles on the transfer surface.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the means for transferring the aligned mat to the mat-receiving surface is an electrically insulative, endless belt.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the means for establishing the electric field includes electrically conductive elements imbedded in the transfer surface at spaced intervals, and means for electrically charging the conductive elements.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the transfer surface is inclined downwardly toward the mat-receiving surface in the direction of movement thereof at an angle ranging from 0.degree. to 65.degree. relative to a plane parallel to the mat-receiving surface.
- 8. An apparatus for the manufacture of mats of aligned lignocellulosic products having directional qualities, comprising:
- an orienting zone having a first directional electric field for electrically orienting a multitude of discrete particles of lignocellulosic material;
- an electrically insulative transfer surface having a discharge end positioned beneath the orienting zone to receive the discrete lignocellulosic particles thereon as a mat of aligned particles;
- an electrically conductive mat-receiving surface maintained at ground potential positioned adjacent the discharge end of the transfer surface to receive the mat of aligned particles thereon;
- means for establishing and maintaining a second directional electric field with electrical lines of force parallel to the lines of force of the first electric field immediately above the transfer surface to maintain the alignment of the particles making up the mat during transfer thereof to the mat-receiving surface; and
- means for transferring the aligned mat from the transfer surface to the mat-receiving surface.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8, including power means for moving the mat-receiving surface adjacent the transfer surface to receive the mat of aligned particles thereon in the form of a continuous mat.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the orienting zone includes at least two spaced-apart, electrically conductive plate electrodes electrically charged to provide an electrical potential therebetween sufficient to align particles of lignocellulosic material passing between them.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the means for transferring the aligned mat to the mat-receiving surface includes means suspending the mat of aligned particles above the transfer surface within the second electric field.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the means for transferring the aligned mat is an electrically non-conductive moving belt.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the means for suspending the mat includes means imparting vibratory motion to the transfer surface sufficient to suspend the mat of aligned particles thereon.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the means for suspending the mat of aligned particles includes a planar, electrically insulative, porous surface, and means providing a gas under pressure through the porous surface to provide a gas film between the porous surface and the mat of aligned particles thereon.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the means for establishing the second electric field includes electrically conductive elements imbedded in the transfer surface beneath each of the plate electrodes, and means electrically charging the conductive elements with the same polarity as the spaced electrode plate above it.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the transfer surface is inclined downwardly toward the mat-receiving surface in the direction of movement thereof at an angle ranging from 0.degree. to 65.degree. relative to a plane extending parallel to the mat-receiving surface.
- 17. A continuous in-line apparatus for the manufacture of mats of aligned discrete lignocellulosic particles employed in the manufacture of comminuted pressed lignocellulosic products having directional qualities, comprising:
- a grounded, electrically conductive, mat-receiving surface;
- power means for moving the mat-receiving surface;
- a plurality of spaced-apart, electrically conductive plate electrodes disposed substantially parallel to one another and generally at right angles to the mat-receiving surface;
- means for electrically charging the respective spaced-apart plate electrodes to provide a first directional field therebetween sufficient to align discrete particles of lignocellulosic particles passing therebetween;
- electrically insulative transfer surface means positioned beneath the spaced-apart plate electrodes to receive the multitude of discrete aligned particles thereon as a mat of aligned particles for discharge onto the moving, mat-receiving surface, the transfer surface means including electrically conductive elements positioned parallel to and beneath each of the spaced-apart plate electrodes;
- means for electrically charging the respective conductive elements with the same polarity as the spaced electrode directly thereabove; and
- means for transferring the mat of aligned lignocellulosic particles on the transfer surface to the grounded, mat-receiving surface.
- 18. The in-line apparatus of claim 17 wherein the voltage gradient between the spaced-apart plate electrodes, the spaced conductive elements and the last of the conductive elements and the grounded, mat-receiving surface are maintained substantially equal.
