Claims
- 1. An apparatus for pulling a cable through a duct, said duct including:
- a downstream end,
- an upstream end, and
- an access point intermediate said ends dividing said duct into a first segment adjacent the upstream end and a second segment adjacent said downstream end, and for pulling said cable in a downstream direction while preserving the integrity of said cable, said apparatus comprising:
- a) a primary device for exerting a first pulling tension upon said cable to pull said cable at a pulling speed from the downstream end of said duct;
- b) a relay device responsive to said pulling speed for exerting a second pulling tension upon said cable to pull said cable at a relay speed from a downstream end of said first segment and for availing said cable to the upstream end of said second segment;
- c) first monitoring means for directly and continuously monitoring said first pulling tension and for limiting said first pulling tension to a predetermined value; and
- d) second monitoring means for directly and continuously monitoring said second pulling tension and for limiting said second pulling tension to a predetermined value.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said relay device includes:
- a. first means for pulling said cable from the downstream end of said first segment and relaying said cable to the upstream end of said second segment; and
- b. second means for controllably varying said first means to move said cable at a relay speed which is variable in proportion to said pulling speed.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein said second means is responsive to a differential between said pulling speed and said relay speed to control said first means to pull said cable at a relay speed which is in equilibrium with said pulling speed.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein said second means controls said first means to accelerate when said pulling speed exceeds said relay speed and to decelerate when said relay speed exceeds said pulling speed.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said relay device includes:
- a) cable handling means for exerting said second pulling tension upon said cable;
- b) variable speed dive means for driving said cable handling means to move said cable at said relay speed;
- c) cable speed sensing means responsive to a differential between said pulling speed an said relay speed; and
- d) control means responsive to said cable speed sensing means for varying the speed of said drive means to achieve equilibrium between said pulling speed and said relay speed.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein:
- a) said cable speed sensing means is movable in a first direction in response to said pulling speed being greater than said relay speed and in a second direction in response to said pulling speed being less than said relay speed; and
- b) said control means increases the speed of said drive means in response to said sensing means moving in said first direction and decreases the speed of said drive means in response to said sensing means moving in said second direction
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, further including biasing means normally urging said sensing means in said second direction.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each said monitoring means receives a portion of said cable thereagainst and is responsive to the respective pulling tension for limiting the pulling tension applied thereto by the respective device to said predetermined value.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein each said device includes:
- a) cable handling means for exerting the respective said pulling tension upon said cable;
- b) a frame for supporting said cable handling means at an elevation above said duct; and
- c) infeed guide means for guiding said cable from the downstream end of the respective segment to said cable handling means.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein said relay device further includes out feed guide means for guiding said cable from the cable handling means thereof to upstream end of said second segment.
- 11. In a device for pulling a cable, said device including
- drive means, and
- cable handling means operative in response to said drive means for exerting pulling tension upon said cable,
- improvements therein for limiting pulling tension exerted upon said cable, said improvements comprising:
- a) first means for directly and continuously monitoring tension exerted upon said cable by said cable handling means; and
- b) second means for controlling operative response of said cable handling means to said drive means, said second means being responsive to said first means whereby the tension exerted upon said cable is maintained below a predetermined value.
- 12. The improvements of claim 11, wherein:
- a) said first means is urged to move in response to the tension exerted upon said cable; and
- b) said second means moderates operative response of said cable handling means to said drive means in response to movement of said first means.
- 13. The improvements of claim 12, wherein said drive means includes a motor for driving said cable handling means and a source of power for supplying motive energy to said motor, and said second means includes:
- control means for controlling the motive energy supplied to said motor in response to movement of said first means.
- 14. The improvements of claim 13, wherein said first means is movable between
- a normal position in which a predetermined motive energy is supplied to said motor; and
- a displaced position in which said second means is activated to decrease motive energy being supplied to said motor.
- 15. The improvements of claim 14, further including biasing means for urging said first means into said normal position.
- 16. The improvements of claim 13, wherein said first means includes a movable member for receiving said cable thereagainst prior to being pulled by said cable handling means.
- 17. An apparatus for pulling a cable through a duct, said duct including:
- a downstream end,
- an upstream end, and
- an access point intermediate said ends dividing said duct into a first segment adjacent the upstream end and a second segment adjacent said downstream end,
- and for pulling said cable in a downstream direction while preserving the integrity of said cable, said apparatus comprising:
- a) a primary device for exerting a first pulling tension upon said cable to pull said cable at a pulling speed from the downstream end of said duct; and
- b) a relay device responsive to said pulling speed for exerting a second pulling tension upon said cable to pull said cable at a relay speed from a downstream end of said first segment and for availing said cable to the upstream end of said second segment; said relay device including:
- i) cable handling means for exerting said second pulling tension upon said cable;
- ii) variable speed drive means for driving said cable handling means to move said cable at said relay speed;
- iii) cable speed sensing means responsive to a differential between said pulling speed and said relay speed; and
- iv) control means responsive to said cable speed sensing means for varying the speed of said drive means to achieve equilibrium between said pulling speed and said relay speed.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein:
- a) said cable speed sensing means is movable in a first direction in response to said pulling speed being greater than said relay speed and in a second direction in response to said pulling speed being less than said relay speed; and
- b) said control means increases the speed of said drive means in response to said sensing means moving in said first direction and decreases the speed of said drive means in response to said sensing means moving in said second direction.
- 19. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein each said device includes:
- a) cable handling means for engaging said cable;
- b) drive means for driving said cable handling means to exert the respective pulling tension upon said cable; and
- c) monitoring means for receiving said cable thereagainst and responsive to the pulling tension therein for curtailing said drive mans in response to said pulling tension exceeding a predetermined value.
- 20. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein each said device includes:
- a) cable handling means for exerting the respective said pulling tension upon said cable;
- b) a frame for supporting said cable handling means at an elevation above said duct; and
- c) infeed guide means for guiding said cable from the downstream end of the respective segment to said cable handling means.
