Claims
- 1. An apparatus, in a riveting machine, for removing an undeformed rivet from a rivet hole in a workpiece, before said rivet is upset by said riveting machine, said apparatus comprising:
- a rivet dimension sensor for sensing at least one rivet dimension on said rivet;
- a comparator for comparing said at least one sensed rivet dimension with a predetermined set of dimension tolerance limits;
- a movable suction cavity disposed adjacent to a plane on which one side of said workpiece will be supported;
- a mechanism for moving said suction cavity over said rivet hole in said workpiece when said rivet is to be removed;
- a pusher for pushing said undeformed rivet in said rivet hole into said suction cavity;
- a connector for coupling a suction hose from a source of suction to a suction port in said suction cavity;
- whereby a rivet sensed by said rivet dimension sensor to be our of dimensional tolerance is removed prior to being upset by said riveting machine by moving said suction cavity over said rivet, and pushing said rivet into said suction cavity while applying suction to said cavity to draw said rivet into said cavity and out said suction port in said cavity.
- 2. The apparatus for removing an undeformed rivet from a rivet hole in a workpiece as defined in claim 1, further comprising:
- a rivet holder for holding said rivet in a reference position while said suction cavity is moved over said rivet hole, said rivet holder includes a tubular rivet die enclosure having a coupling for attachment of a suction hose connected to a source of vacuum;
- whereby said tubular rivet die enclosure is pressed against a surface of said workpiece and over said rivet, and vacuum is applied through said suction hose to hold said rivet in said reference position.
- 3. The apparatus for removing an undeformed rivet from a rivet hole in a workpiece as defined in claim 2, wherein:
- said pusher includes a rivet die in said tubular rivet die enclosure for pushing said rivet toward said suction cavity.
- 4. The apparatus for removing an undeformed rivet from a rivet hole in a workpiece as defined in claim 3, further comprising:
- a mechanism for moving said rivet dies against said surface of said workpiece, pushing said rivet into said suction cavity and covering said rivet hole to loosen the hold of said suction in said tubular die enclosure on said rivet to facilitate the removal of said rivet from said rivet hole by said suction in said suction cavity.
- 5. The apparatus for removing an undeformed rivet from a rivet hole in a workpiece as defined in claim 1, wherein:
- said rivet dimension sensor includes a pair a detectors for detecting when said rivet is within rivet length limits; said detectors being mounted in said riveting machine separated apart in a direction parallel to a longitudinal axis of said rivet hole, said separation between said detectors being equal to said rivet length tolerance;
- a vane operatively mounted on said pusher in line with said detectors;
- whereby said vane, moving with said pusher, will be detected by one of said sensors, but no by both sensors, when said rivet is within said length tolerance limits.
