Claims
- 1. An apparatus for rotary cathode electroplating comprising:a head assembly; a substrate/thief assembly configured to hold a substrate, said substrate/thief assembly having a thieving ring including a plurality of individually chargeable segments, said substrate/thief assembly further having at least one secondary induction assembly including a secondary core and a secondary winding; a motor which is coupled to said substrate/thief assembly such that said substrate/thief assembly is driven to rotate relative to said head assembly by the action of said motor; a controller which is adapted to direct electrical charge to each of said plurality of individually chargeable segments of said thieving ring; an electrical storage device which is adapted to store electrical energy which is to be supplied to said controller; at least one charging apparatus which induces a magnetic flux in said at least one secondary induction assembly, such that an alternating current is induced in said secondary winding of said secondary induction assembly; and a converter which is adapted to convert said induced alternating current to direct current, which is then stored on said electrical storage device.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:said at least one charging apparatus includes a primary induction assembly mounted on said head assembly, said primary induction assembly having a primary winding, such that when said primary induction assembly is aligned with said secondary induction assembly and an alternating current is passed through said primary winding of said primary induction assembly, a secondary alternating current is induced in said secondary winding of said secondary induction assembly.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein:said substrate/thief assembly has a rotation cycle which includes a designated home position in said rotation cycle, and said substrate/thief assembly comes to rest periodically in said home position; and said primary induction assembly is aligned in close spatial proximity with said secondary induction assembly when said substrate/thief assembly is in said home position, such that when a magnetic flux is produced in said primary induction assembly, said magnetic flux extends into said secondary induction assembly, generating a secondary alternating current in said secondary winding of said secondary induction assembly.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:said at least one charging apparatus includes a plurality of magnets which produce a magnetic field in close proximity to said secondary induction assembly, such that rotation of said secondary induction assembly within said magnetic field produces an alternating current in said secondary winding of said secondary induction assembly.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein:said plurality of magnets are permanent magnets.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:said at least one charging apparatus includes a primary induction assembly having a stationary primary winding and also includes a motor shaft attached to said motor, said motor shaft having first and second shaft portions, said first portion of said motor shaft being surrounded by said stationary primary winding; and said second portion of said motor shaft being surrounded by said secondary winding of said secondary induction assembly such that when alternating electric current is passed through said primary winding of said primary induction assembly, a magnetic flux is induced in said motor shaft, said magnetic flux extending from said first motor shaft portion into said second motor shaft portion, which then induces an alternating electric current in said secondary winding of said secondary induction assembly.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein:said at least one charging apparatus includes at least two charging apparatuses which are symmetrically arranged for good balance during rotation.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein: said electrical storage device is at least one rechargeable battery.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein:said electrical storage device is at least one capacitor.
