Claims
- 1. An elastomeric matrix material reinforced with filamentary material coated with the dried residue of an aqueous adhesive coating composition, comprising:
- A. A vinyl-pyridine-containing elastomeric latex selected from the group consisting of an elastomeric copolymer latex produced from a vinyl pyridine-containing monomer and 1,3-diene hydrocarbon monomer and an elastomeric terpolymer latex produced from vinyl pyridine-containing monomer, 1,3-diene hydrocarbon monomer and a vinyl-containing monomer,
- B. phenolic aldehyde condensate polymer,
- C. non-self-crosslinkable elastomeric latex having a gel content of less than 40% and an average particle size of less than around 2000 angstroms present in the coating composition in a predominant amount over the amount of the vinyl pyridine-containing copolymer or terpolymer,
- D. carboxylated butadiene polymer or carboxylated butadiene-styrene copolymer present in the amount of about 0.5 to about 3 weight percent of the dried solids of the aqueous coating composition,
- E. and water.
- 2. An elastomeric material reinforced with glass fibers coated with the dried residue of an aqueous coating composition as glass fibers, strands or bundles of glass fibers, comprising in weight percent of the dried aqueous coating:
- A. about 10 to about 55 percent of a vinyl pyridine-1,3-diene hydrocarbon-styrene,
- B. about 1 to about 8 percent of a resorcinol formaldehyde condensate polymer,
- C. about 60 to about 98 percent of a nonself-crosslinkable elastomeric latex having a gel content of less than around 40 weight percent and an average particle size of less than around 2000 angstroms,
- D. about 1 to about 10 percent of a wax emulsion,
- E. about 0.5 to about 3 percent of an antioxidant,
- F. about 0.5 to about 3 percent of carboxylated butadiene polymer or carboxylated styrene butadiene copolymer,
- G. water in an amount to give a total solid for an aqueous composition in the range of about 15 to about 35 weight percent.
- 3. The elastomeric material of claims 1 or 2, wherein the 1,3-diene hydrocarbon monomer is a 1,3-butadiene.
- 4. The elastomeric material of claims 1 or 2, wherein the vinyl-containing monomer is styrene.
- 5. The elastomeric material of claims 1 or 2, wherein the phenolic aldehyde condensation polymer is a resorcinol-formaldehyde condensate polymer.
- 6. The elastomeric material of claim 5, wherein the resorcinol formaldehyde polymer has predominantly trimer polymers.
- 7. The elastomeric material of claims 1 or 2, wherein the nonself-crosslinkable elastomeric latex is a polybutadiene homopolymer latex.
- 8. The elastomeric material according to claims 1 or 2, where included in the aqueous coating composition is a wax emulsion.
- 9. The elastomeric material of claims 1 or 2, where included in the aqueous coating composition is an antioxidant.
- 10. Elastomeric material of claim 1, wherein the filamentary material is glass fibers.
- 11. Elastomeric material of claim 2, wherein the aqueous treating composition includes carboxylated styrene butadiene copolymer latex in an amount of about 0.5 to about 3 weight percent of the dried aqueous coating, when the amount of non-selfcrosslinkable elastomeric latex is greater than about 65 weight percent at around 50 percent solids.
- 12. Elastomeric material of claims 3 or 2, wherein in the aqueous treating composition the gel content is in the range of about 15 to about 25 weight percent.
- 13. Elastomeric material of claims 3 or 2, wherein, in the aqueous coating the average particle size is in the range of about 500 to 1400 angstroms.
- 14. Elastomeric material of claim 1, wherein the aqueous coating composition has a nonself-crosslinkable elastomeric latex present in an amount of about 65 to about 95 weight percent on a dry solids basis of the aqueous coating composition.
- 15. Elastomeric material of claim 2, wherein the glass fibers before treatment with the coating composition have a dried residue of an aqueous sizing composition having a starch film former, silane coupling agent, and lubricant.
- 16. Elastomeric material of claim 3, wherein the glass fibers before treatment with the coating composition have the dried residue of an aqueous sizing composition having a nonstarch film former, silane coupling agent, and lubricant.
