Claims
- 1. A gamma detector assembly for use in mining, comprising:means for receiving and transforming radiation into light impulses; means for receiving and quantifying light impulses optically coupled to said means for receiving and transforming radiation into light impulses; and an explosion-proof enclosure, wherein said means for receiving and quantifying light impulses is encased within said explosion-proof enclosure and said means for receiving and transforming radiation into light impulses is adjacent to said explosion-proof enclosure.
- 2. The gamma detector assembly of claim 1, wherein said means for receiving and transforming radiation into light impulses comprises a scintillation element.
- 3. The gamma detector assembly of claim 1, wherein said means for receiving and quantifying light impulses comprises a photomultiplier tube.
- 4. The gamma detector assembly of claim 1, further comprising a power supply encased within said explosion-proof enclosure.
- 5. The gamma detector assembly of claim 1, further comprising logic elements encased within said explosion-proof enclosure.
- 6. The gamma detector assembly of claim 2, further comprising:a plurality of springs extending the length of said scintillation element within a housing; and a rigid enclosure enclosing said housing and extending the length of the assembly.
- 7. The gamma detector assembly of claim 6, further comprising an elastomeric material surrounding said rigid enclosure.
- 8. The gamma detector assembly of claim 1, wherein said means for receiving and quantifying light impulses are optically coupled to said means for receiving and transforming radiation into light impulses through a window.
- 9. The gamma detector assembly of claim 8, wherein said window is formed of sapphire.
- 10. The gamma detector assembly of claim 1, further comprising a conduit adapted to allow power to enter said explosion-proof enclosure.
- 11. The gamma detector assembly of claim 10, further comprising a cap gland attached to an end of said explosion-proof enclosure, wherein said conduit extends through said cap gland into said explosion-proof enclosure.
- 12. The gamma detector assembly of claim 1, further comprising a shield encasing said scintillation element.
- 13. The gamma detector assembly of claim 12, wherein said scintillation element comprises sodium iodide.
