Claims
- 1. A composition comprising:
- (a) at least one poly(arylene sulfide),
- (b) at least one polysiloxane having the repeating unit ##STR3## (c) at least one trialkoxysilane having the formula X--Si(OR').sub.3, and (d) at least one solid, resinous polyolefin; wherein each R is a monovalent hydrocarbyl radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, individually selected from the group consisting of alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkylcycloalkyl, aryl and alkaryl; each R' is a radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, individually selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkoxyalkyl and alkylcarbonyl radicals; and X is a radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkenyl, epoxyalkyl, mercaptoalkyl, aminoalkyl, N-(aminoalkyl)aminoalkyl, ureidoalkyl, haloalkyl, alkenoyloxyalkyl, and epoxyalkoxyalkyl groups.
- 2. A composition in accordance with claim 1, wherein the amounts of components (b), (c) and (d) are effective to increase the impact strength of (a).
- 3. A composition in accordance with claim 1 comprising 100 parts by weight of said poly(arylene sulfide), about 0.1 to about 25 parts by weight of said polysiloxane, about 0.01 to about 5 parts by weight of said trialkoxysilane, and about 0.05 to about 20 parts by weight of said solid, resinous polyolefin.
- 4. A composition in accordance with claim 1, wherein said solid, resinous polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of homopolymers and copolymers of mono-1-olefin having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms per monomer molecule.
- 5. A composition in accordance with claim 4, wherein said solid, resinous polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene and polypropylene.
- 6. A composition in accordance with claim 1, wherein said poly(arylene sulfide) is poly(phenylene sulfide).
- 7. A composition in accordance with claim 1, wherein the molecular weight of said polysiloxane is in the range of from about 100,000 to about 400,000.
- 8. A composition in accordance with claim 7, wherein said polysiloxane is a silanol-terminated polysiloxane.
- 9. A composition in accordance with claim 1, wherein said polysiloxane is a silanol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane having a molecular weight in the range of from about 250,000 to about 400,000.
- 10. A composition in accordance with claim 1, wherein said trialkoxysilane is selected from the group consisting of 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane.
- 11. A composition in accordance with claim 1, wherein said poly(arylene sulfide) is poly(phenylene sulfide), the molecular weight of said polysiloxane is in the range of from about 100,000 to about 400,000, said trialkoxysilane is selected from the group consisting of 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and said solid, resinous polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene and polypropylene.
- 12. A composition in accordance with claim 11, wherein said polysiloxane is a silanol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane having a molecular weight in the range of from about 250,000 to about 400,000.
- 13. A composition in accordance with claim 11 comprising 100 parts by weight of poly(phenylene sulfide), from about 0.5 to about 15 parts by weight of said polysiloxane, from about 0.05 to about 1 part by weight of said trialkoxysilane and from about 0.1 to about 10 parts by weight of said solid, resinous polyolefin.
- 14. A composition in accordance with claim 13, wherein said polysiloxane is a silanol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane having a molecular weight in the range of from about 250,000 to about 400,000.
- 15. A composition in accordance with claim 11 comprising 100 parts by weight of poly(phenylene sulfide), about 0.7 to about 10 parts by weight of said polysiloxane, about 0.07 to about 0.5 parts by weight of said trialkoxysilane, and about 0.5 to about 6 parts by weight of said solid, resinous polyolefin.
- 16. A composition in accordance with claim 15, wherein said polysiloxane is a silanol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane having a molecular weight in the range of from about 250,000 to about 400,000.
- 17. A composition in accordance with claim 1 comprising about 1 to about 20 parts by weight of said poly(arylene sulfide), about 0.1 to about 25 parts by weight of said polysiloxane, about 0.01 to about 5 parts of said trialkoxysilane and about 0.05 to about 20 parts by weight of said solid, resinous polyolefin.
- 18. A composition in accordance with claim 17, wherein said poly(arylene sulfide) is poly(phenylene sulfide) and said solid, resinous polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene and polypropylene.
- 19. A composition in accordance with claim 17, wherein said poly(arylene) sulfide is poly(phenylene sulfide) and said polysiloxane has a molecular weight in the range of from about 100,000 to about 400,000.
- 20. A composition in accordance with claim 19, wherein said polysiloxane is a silanol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane having a molecular weight in the range of from about 250,000 to about 400,000.
- 21. A process which comprises blending
- (a) at least one poly(arylene sulfide).
- (b) at least one polysiloxane having the repeating unit ##STR4## (c) at least one trialkoxysilane having the formula X--Si(OR').sub.3, and (d) at least one solid, resinous polyolefin; wherein each R is a monovalent hydrocarbyl radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, individually selected from the group consisting of alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkylcycloalkyl, aryl and alkaryl; each R', is a radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, individually selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkoxyalkyl and alkylcarbonyl radicals; and X is a radical having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkenyl, epoxyalkyl, mercaptoalkyl, aminoalkyl, N-(aminoalkyl)aminoalkyl, ureidoalkyl, haloalkyl, alkenoyloxyalkyl, and epoxyalkoxyalkyl groups.
- 22. A process in accordance with claim 21, wherein the amounts of components (b), (c) and (d) are effective to increase the impact strength of (a).
- 23. A process in accordance with claim 21, wherein 100 parts by weight of said poly(arylene sulfide), about 0.1 to about 25 parts by weight of said polysiloxane, about 0.01 to about 5 parts by weight of said trialkoxysilane, and about 0.05 to about 20 parts by weight of said solid, resinous polyolefin are blended.
- 24. A process in accordance with claim 21, wherein said solid, resinous polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of homopolymers and copolymers of mono-l-olefin having from 2 to 6 carbon atoms per monomer molecule.
- 25. A process in accordance with claim 24, wherein said solid, resinous polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene and polypropylene.
- 26. A process in accordance with claim 21, wherein said poly(arylene sulfide) is poly(phenylene sulfide).
- 27. A process in accordance with claim 21, wherein the molecular weight of said polysiloxane is in the range of from about 100,000 to about 400,000.
- 28. A process in accordance with claim 27, wherein said polysiloxane is a silanol-terminated polysiloxane.
- 29. A process in accordance with claim 21, wherein said polysiloxane is a silanol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane having a molecular weight in the range of from about 250,000 to about 400,000.
- 30. A process in accordance with claim 21, wherein said trialkoxysilane is selected from the group consisting of 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane.
- 31. A process in accordance with claim 21, wherein said poly(arylene sulfide) is poly(phenylene sulfide), the molecular weight of said polysiloxane is in the range of from about 100,000 to about 400,000, said trialkoxysilane is selected from the group consisting of 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane and 3-aminopropyltrichoxysilane, and said solid, resinous polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene and polypropylene.
- 32. A process in accordance with claim 31, wherein said polysiloxane is a silanol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane having a molecular weight in the range of from about 250,000 to about 400,000.
- 33. A process in accordance with claim 31, wherein 100 parts by weight of poly(phenylene sulfide), about 0.5 to about 15 parts by weight of said polysiloxane, about 0.05 to about 1 part by weight of said trialkoxysilane, and about 0.1 to about 10 parts by weight of said polyolefin are blended.
- 34. A process in accordance with claim 21 comprising the steps of dry-blending components (a), (b), (c) and (d), melting the dry-blended mixture of (a), (b), (c) and (d), and extruding the melted mixture of (a), (b), (c) and (d).
- 35. A process in accordance with claim 34 comprising the additional step of molding the extruded mixture of (a), (b), (c) and (d) obtained in the process of claim 34.
- 36. A process in accordance with claim 21 comprising the steps of
- (i) blending components (b), (c) and (d), and
- (ii) blending the mixture obtained in step (i) with component (a).
- 37. A process in accordance with claim 36, wherein said blending step (i) comprises the step of dry-blending components (b), (c) and (d), melting the dry-blending mixture of (b), (c) and (d), extruding the melted blend of (b), (c) and (d) so as to make pellets.
- 38. A process in accordance with claim 37, wherein said step (ii) comprises the step of melt-blending the mixture of components (b), (c) and (d) obtained in step (i) with component (a).
- 39. A process in accordance with claim 36, wherein said blend obtained in step (i) comprises about 0.1 to about 25 parts by weight of component (b), about 0.01 to about 5 parts by weight of component (c), and about 0.05 to about 20 parts by weight of component (d).
- 40. A process in accordance with claim 36, wherein component (a) is poly(phenylene sulfide), component (b) has a molecular weight in the range of from about 100,000 to about 400,000, and component (d) is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene and polypropylene.
- 41. A process in accordance with claim 39, wherein said blend obtained in step (i) is blended with 100 parts by weight of poly(phenylene sulfide) in step (ii).
