Claims
- 1. A supportive upper for an athletic shoe having toe, midfoot and heel regions, said upper comprising:a foot conforming support member having an interior surface in facing relationship with the foot of a wearer and an exterior surface which forms a portion of the outermost surface of the upper; an inflatable exoskeleton attached to a portion of said exterior surface of said foot conforming support member, said inflatable exoskeleton comprising two thin films which are bonded along their peripheral edges to form at least one fluid impervious compartment; an overlay positioned over said inflatable exoskeleton to inhibit outward bulging of said inflatable exoskeleton away from a surface of a wearer's foot, said overlay allowing visualization of said inflatable exoskeleton through said overlay; and an inflation mechanism for inflating said inflatable exoskeleton.
- 2. The upper of claim 1, wherein said two thin films comprise an elastomeric material.
- 3. The upper of claim 1, wherein said overlay is a mesh fabric.
- 4. The upper of claim 1, wherein said overlay is a thin, transparent film.
- 5. The upper of claim 4, wherein said film is thermal polyurethane.
- 6. The upper of claim 1 further comprising a release mechanism.
- 7. The upper of claim 1, wherein said inflation mechanism is an on-board pump.
- 8. The upper of claim 7, wherein said inflatable exoskeleton comprises a heel compartment.
- 9. The upper of claim 8, wherein said heel compartment comprises a tab and said pump is positioned on said tab.
- 10. An upper for an athletic shoe comprising:a first component having an interior and an exterior; and a second component, said second component being attached to at least a portion of said exterior of said first component such that both of said first and second components form at least a portion of an outermost surface of the upper, said second component comprising an inflatable chamber which includes a lateral midfoot compartment and a medial midfoot compartment, said lateral and medial midfoot compartments being separated from each other at mid and lower portions thereof and joined to each other at upper portions thereof by a compartment fluidly connected to said lateral midfoot compartment and said medial midfoot compartment.
- 11. The upper of claim 10, wherein said inflatable chamber is formed from two substantially flat laminates.
- 12. The upper of claim 10, wherein said inflatable chamber further includes a lateral rearfoot compartment and a medial rearfoot compartment.
- 13. The upper of claim 10, wherein said first component is a support member which conforms to the upper portion of a wearer's foot.
- 14. The upper of claim 10, wherein said inflatable chamber includes an inflation mechanism.
- 15. The upper of claim 10, further comprising an open-celled overlay positioned over at least a portion of said second component to limit outward expansion of said inflatable chamber during inflation.
- 16. An upper for an athletic shoe, comprising:a support member which substantially surrounds the upper portion of a wearer's foot and forms at least a portion of the outermost surface of the upper; an inflatable chamber attached to a portion of an exterior of said support member and forming at least another portion of the outermost surface of the upper, said inflatable chamber defining a plurality of fluidly connected compartments which are substantially symmetrical about an axis which divides said inflatable chamber; and an overlay positioned over at least a portion of said inflatable chamber to limit outward expansion of said inflatable chamber during inflation.
- 17. The upper of claim 16, wherein said overlay comprises an open-celled fabric.
- 18. The upper of claim 16, wherein said inflatable chamber comprises at least two substantially flat thin films.
- 19. The upper of claim 16, wherein said inflatable chamber further comprises a fluid inflation mechanism permanently attached to said chamber.
- 20. The upper of claim 16, wherein said inflatable chamber further comprises a fluid release mechanism.
- 21. The upper of claim 16, wherein said inflatable chamber defines symmetrical tongue, rearfoot, and midfoot compartments.
- 22. An upper for an athletic shoe having a toe end and a heel end, comprising:a support member which surrounds and extends substantially from the toe end to the heel end of the upper and forms a portion of an outermost surface of the upper; and an inflatable chamber attached to and positioned over a substantial portion of said support member between the toe end and the heel end of the upper, such that said inflatable chamber forms another portion of the outermost surface of the upper.
- 23. The upper of claim 22 further comprising an open-celled overlay positioned over a portion of said inflatable chamber to limited outward expansion of said inflatable chamber during inflation.
