Claims
- 1. A position feedback device for a remote controlled vehicle mirror assembly, the assembly including a mirror face, a fixed shaft, a frame, and a remote means for controlling the vehicle mirror assembly, the position feedback device comprising:
- a housing attachable to the frame of the vehicle mirror assembly to be rotatable with the frame, such that the fixed shaft of the vehicle mirror assembly projects through the housing;
- a first pulley supported in the housing and fixedly attachable to the fixed shaft;
- a second pulley supported in the housing to be rotatable with the housing and the frame;
- a timing belt extending between the two pulleys;
- a potentiometer attached to the second pulley and rotatable with the second pulley; and
- a cable projecting from the potentiometer and attachable to the remote means for controlling the vehicle mirror.
- 2. A position feedback device in accordance with claim 1, wherein the first pulley has a first selected diameter and the second pulley has a second selected diameter that is less than the first selected diameter.
- 3. A position feedback device in accordance with claim 2, wherein the first selected diameter is twice as large as the second selected diameter.
- 4. A remote controlled vehicle mirror assembly, comprising:
- a frame attachable to a vehicle and mounted to be rotatable about a fixed shaft;
- a mirror face removably mounted in an opening of the frame; and
- a mirror position feedback device, comprising:
- a housing attached to the frame to be rotatable with the frame, the fixed shaft projecting through the housing;
- a first pulley supported in the housing and fixedly attached to the fixed shaft;
- a second pulley supported in the housing to be rotatable with the housing and the frame;
- a timing belt extending between the two pulleys;
- a potentiometer attached to the second pulley and rotatable with the second pulley; and
- a cable projecting from the potentiometer and attached to a remote means for controlling rotation of the frame.
- 5. A remote controlled vehicle mirror assembly according to claim 4, wherein the mirror face is selected from a group of mirror faces having different optical characteristics.
- 6. A position feedback device for a remote controlled rotatable vehicle mirror assembly, the assembly comprising a plurality of components including a mirror face a fixed shaft, a frame, and a remote means for controlling the vehicle mirror assembly, the position feedback device comprising:
- a housing attachable to the frame of the vehicle mirror assembly such that the fixed shaft of the vehicle mirror assembly projects through the housing;
- a first pulley supported in the housing and fixedly attachable to the fixed shaft;
- a second pulley supported in the housing to be rotatable with a component of the vehicle mirror assembly;
- a timing belt extending between the two pulleys;
- a potentiometer attached to the second pulley and rotatable with the second pulley; and
- a transmission means for transmitting information related to the rotation of the component of the vehicle mirror assembly from the potentiometer to the remote means for controlling the vehicle mirror assembly.
- 7. A mirror position feedback device in accordance with claim 6, wherein the transmission means includes a cable.
- 8. A position feedback device for a remote controlled rotatable vehicle mirror assembly, the assembly comprising a plurality of components including a mirror face, a frame, a fixed shaft, and a remote means for controlling the vehicle mirror assembly, the position feedback device comprising:
- a housing attachable to the frame of the vehicle mirror assembly;
- a sensing means supported in the housing for sensing an amount of rotation of a component of the vehicle mirror assembly, the sensing means including a potentiometer rotatable in an amount proportional to the amount of rotation of the component of the vehicle mirror assembly, a first fixed pulley and a second pulley rotatable with the component of the vehicle mirror assembly, and a timing belt coupling the two pulleys, the potentiometer being rotatable with the second pulley; and
- transmitting means supported by the housing for transmitting the amount of rotation of the component of the vehicle mirror assembly to the remote means for controlling the vehicle mirror assembly.
- 9. A position feedback device in accordance with claim 8, wherein the potentiometer calculates the amount of mirror assembly rotation based on an amount of rotation of the second pulley and movement of the timing belt.
- 10. A position feedback device in accordance with claim 8, wherein the first pulley has a first diameter and the second pulley has a second diameter greater than the first diameter.
- 11. A position feedback device according to claim 10, wherein the second diameter is approximately two times the first diameter.
- 12. A position feedback device in accordance with claim 8, wherein the transmitting means includes a cable.
