Claims
- 1. A block copolymer comprising:
a first polymer segment of first monomer units, the first monomer units being derived from a first polymerizable monomer selected from the group consisting of styrene, substituted styrene, alkyl acrylate, substituted alkyl acrylate, alkyl methacrylate, substituted alkyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, N-alkylacrylamide, N-alkylmethacrylamide, N,N-dialkylacrylamide, N,N-dialkylmethacrylamide, isoprene, butadiene, ethylene, vinyl acetate and combinations thereof, wherein the first segment has a weight average molecular weight greater than about 25,000; and a second polymer segment.
- 2. The block copolymer of claim 1, wherein the first polymer segment has a weight average molecular weight greater than about 50,000.
- 3. The block copolymer of claim 1, wherein the first polymer segment has a weight average molecular weight greater than about 75,000.
- 4. The block copolymer of claim 1, wherein the first polymer segment has a weight average molecular weight greater than about 100,000.
- 5. The block copolymer of claim 1, wherein the second polymer segment compris es a segment of second monomer units derived from a second polymerizable monomer selected from the group consisting of styrene, substituted styrene, alkyl acrylate, substituted alkyl acrylate, alkyl methacrylate, substituted alkyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, N-alkylacrylamide, N-alkylmethacrylamide, N,N-dialkylacrylamide, N,N-dialkylmethacrylarnide, isoprene, butadiene, ethylene, vinyl acetate and combinations thereof.
- 6. The block copolymer of claim 5, wherein the first and second polymer segments are se lected from different classes from the set of classes consisting of styrenes and substituted styrenes, acrylates, methacrylates, acrylamides, methacrylamides, and N-vinyl and O-vinyl compounds.
- 7. The block copolymer of claim 5, wherein both of the first and second segments have weight average molecular weights greater than about 25,000.
- 8. The block copolymer of claim 5, wherein both of the first and second segments have weight average molecular weights greater than about 50,000.
- 9. The block copolymer of claim 5, wherein both of the first and second segments have weight average molecular weights greater than about 100,000.
- 10. The block copolymer of claim 5, wherein the first and second monomer units are selected from the group consisting of styrene, butyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, acrylamnide and acrylonitrile.
- 11. The block copolymer of claim 1, wherein the block copolymer is an amphiphilic block copolymer.
- 12. The block copolymer of claim 5, wherein the first monomer unit is styrene and the second monomer unit is acrylic acid.
- 13. The block copolymer of claim 1, wherein the block copolymer is a hard/soft block copolymer.
- 14. The block copolymer of claim 5, wherein the first monomer unit is styrene and the second monomer unit is butyl acrylate.
- 15. The block copolymer of claim 1, wherein the block copolymer is a star block copolymer.
- 16. The block copolymer of claim 1, wherein the block copolymer is a graft block copolymer.
- 17. The block copolymer of claim 1, wherein the block copolymer is a telechelic block copolymer.
- 18. An aqueous emulsion comprising the block copolymer of claim 1.
- 19. The aqueous emulsion of claim 18, comprising a plurality of polymer particles, the particles having an average equivalent hydrodynamic diameter in the range of from about 20 to about 300 nanometers.
- 20. The aqueous emulsion of claim 18, comprising a plurality of polymer particles, the particles having an average equivalent hydrodynamic diameter in the range of from about 20 to about 150 nanometers.
- 21. The aqueous emulsion of claim 18, comprising a plurality of polymer particles, the particles having an average equivalent hydrodynamic diameter in the range of from about 20 to about 80 nanometers.
- 22. The block copolymer of claim 1, having a polydispersity less than about 2.0.
- 23. The block copolymer of claim 1, having a polydispersity less than about 1.5.
- 24. The block copolymer of claim 1, h aving a polydispersity less than about 1.3.
- 25. The block copolymer of claim 1, fuirther comprising a random segments disposed between the first and second segment.
- 26. A block copolymer prepared by an emulsion polymerization process, the process comprising:
forming a mixture comprising water, a first polymerizable monomer, an initiating radical and a control agent, the control agent being characterized by the general formula: 9wherein X is a moiety that is capable of destabilizing the control agent on a polymerization time scale; and each R1, R2 and R3 is independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, substituted cycloalkyl, heteroalkyl, heterocycloalkyl, substituted heterocycloalkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, heteroaryl, substituted heteroaryl, alkoxy, aryloxy, silyl, boryl, phosphino, amino, thio, seleno, and combinations thereof, and polymerizing the first polymerizable monomer to form a polymer.
- 27. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein X is hydrogen.
- 28. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein R1 and R2 are joined together in a ring structure.
- 29. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein R2 and R3 are joined together in a ring structure.
- 30. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein R1 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, substituted cycloalkyl, aryl, and substituted aryl.
- 31. The block copolymer of claim 30, wherein R1 is phenyl.
- 32. The block copolymer of claim 30, wherein R1 is pyridyl.
- 33. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein R2 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl and substituted alkyl.
- 34. The block copolymer of claim 33, wherein R2 is isopropyl.
- 35. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein R3 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, substituted alkyl and heteroalkyl.
- 36. The block copolymer of claim 35, wherein R3 is either tert-butyl or Me3SiOCH2(CH3)2C—.
- 37. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the control agent is a nitroxide having the formula:
- 38. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the initiating radical is derived from an initiator selected from the group consisting of water soluble free radical initiators and solvent soluble free radical initiators.
- 39. The block copolymer of claim 38, wherein the initiating radical is derived from an initiator selected from the group consisting of peroxides, persulfates and azo compou nds.
- 40. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the heterogenous mixture comprises a surfactant.
- 41. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of ionic and non-ionic surfactants.
- 42. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the first polymerizable monomer is a vinyl monomer.
- 43. The block copolymer of claim 42, wherein the first polymerizable monomer is a vinyl monomer selected from the group consisting of styrene, substituted styrene, alkyl acrylate, substituted alkyl acrylate, alkyl methacrylate, substituted alkyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, N-alkylacrylamide, N-alkylmethacrylamide, N,N-dialkylacrylamide, N,N-dialkylmethacrylamide, isoprene, butadiene, ethylene, vinyl acetate and combinations thereof.
- 44. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the heterogeneous mixture comprises an accelerator.
- 45. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the ratio of control agent to initiating radical is in the range of from about 0.1:1 to about 2:1 equivalents.
- 46. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein mixture is a traditional emulsion.
- 47. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the mixture is a mini emulsion.
- 48. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the mixture is a micro emulsion.
- 49. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the mixture is a suspension.
- 50. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the mixture is a dispersion.
- 51. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the mixture further comprises a second polymerizable monomer.
- 52. The block copolymer of claim 51, further comprising adding the first and second polymerizable monomers to the mixture sequentially under polymerization conditions to form a block copolymer having a plurality of blocks.
- 53. The block copolymer of claim 51, further comprising adding the first and second polymerizable monomers to the mixture at the same time to form a random copolymer or higher order interpolymer.
- 54. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the weight average molecular weight of the polymer is greater than about 25,000.
- 55. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the weight average molecular weight of the polymer is greater than about 50,000.
- 56. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the weight average molecular weight of the polymer is greater than about 75,000.
- 57. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the weight average molecular weight of the polymer is greater than about 100,000.
- 58. The block copolymer of claim 52, wherein the weight average molecular weight of a block of the block copolymer is greater than about 25,000.
- 59. The block copolymer of claim 52, wherein the weight average molecular weight of a block of the block copolymer is greater than about 50,000.
- 60. The block copolymer of claim 52, wherein the weight average molecular weight of a block of the block copolymer is greater than about 100,000.
- 61. The block copolymer of claim 52, wherein the weight average molecular weight of each of a plurality of blocks of the block copolymer is greater than about 25,000.
- 62. The block copolymer of claim 52, wherein the weight average molecular weight of each of a plurality of blocks of the block copolymer is greater than about 100,000.
- 63. The block copolymer of claim 26, further comprising controlling the weight average molecular weight of the polymer.
- 64. The block copolymer of claim 26, further comprising controlling the average particle diameter of the polymer.
- 65. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the average particle diameter of the polymer is less than about 100 nanometers.
- 66. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein polymerizing the monomer comprises exposing the mixture to polymerization conditions including living kinetics at a temperature of between room temperature and 250° C.
- 67. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein the polymerization conditions include living kinetics at a temperature of less than 100° C.
- 68. The block copolymer of claim 26, further comprising re-initiating the propagation of a polymer by the addition of a reinitiation monomer, the reinitiation monomer being selected from the group consisting of the first polymerizable monomer and a second polymerizable monomer.
- 69. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein forming a mixture of water, a first polymerizable monomer, an initiating radical and a control agent comprises generating the control agent in situ from a nitrone.
- 70. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein forming a mixture of water, a first polymerizable monomer, an initiating radical and a control agent comprises mixing water, the first polymerizable monomer, a free radical initiator and a nitroxide control agent.
- 71. The block copolymer of claim 26, wherein forming a mixture of water, a first polymerizable monomer, an initiating radical and a control agent comprises mixing water, the first polymerizable monomer and a control agent-initiator adduct, wherein the control agent-initiator adduct is characterized by the general formula:
- 72. The block copolymer of claim 71, wherein Y is 1 -phenylethyl.
- 73. The block copolymer of claim 71, wherein Y is 1-(4-pyridyl)ethyl.
- 74. The block copolymer of claim 71, wherein the adduct has the formula:
- 75. The block copolymer of claim 71, wherein Y forms a water-soluble free radical upon homolytic cleavage of the Y—O bond.
- 76. The block copolymer of claim 26, having a polydispersity is less than about 2.0.
- 77. The block copolymer of claim 26, having a polydispersity is less than about 1.5.
- 78. The block copolymer of claim 26, having a polydispersity is less than about 1.3.
