Claims
- 1. A method of collecting and processing blood from a donor, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing a disposable collection system having
- (i) a first container,
- (ii) a second container,
- (iii) venous-access means,
- (iv) a centrifuge rotor for receiving the blood and having a total volume that varies, and
- (v) tubing connecting the first container, the second container, the venous-access means and the rotor;
- providing a control apparatus for receiving the rotor, the control apparatus including means for spinning the rotor so as to cause the separation of the blood into plasma and red blood cells;
- installing the centrifuge rotor into the control apparatus;
- connecting the donor to the collection system;
- drawing a volume of whole blood from a donor through the venous-access means;
- directing the whole blood from the venous-access means to the rotor into the collection system while the centrifuge rotor is installed in the control apparatus;
- causing the control apparatus to spin the rotor so as to separate the whole blood into plasma and red blood cells;
- directing the plasma from the rotor to the first container; and
- directing the red blood cells from the rotor to the second container.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, further including the steps of:
- adding a solution to the rotor after the plasma has been directed from the rotor to the first container but before the red blood cells have been directed from the rotor;
- agitating the rotor so as to mix the solution and the red blood cells; and
- after the solution and the red blood cells have been mixed, separating the solution and the red blood cells.
- 3. A method according to claim 2, further including the step of removing the venous-access means from the donor after the whole blood has been collected and before any plasma is directed from the rotor.
- 4. A method according to claim 1, further including the step of removing the venous-access means from the donor after the whole blood has been collected and before any fluid is directed from the rotor.
- 5. A method according to claim 1, wherein red-blood-cell storage solution is contained in the second container.
- 6. A method of collecting and processing blood from a donor, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing a disposable collection system having venous-access means, a centrifuge rotor for receiving the blood, a first container, and tubing connecting the first container, the venous-access means and the rotor;
- providing a control apparatus for receiving the rotor, the control apparatus including means for spinning the rotor so as to cause the separation of the blood into blood components;
- installing the centrifuge rotor into the control apparatus;
- connecting the donor to the collection system;
- drawing a volume of whole blood from a donor through the venous-access means;
- directing the whole blood from the venous-access means to the rotor into the collection system while the centrifuge rotor is installed in the control apparatus;
- causing the control apparatus to spin the rotor so as to separate the whole blood into plasma and red blood cells;
- removing the venous-access means from the donor after the whole blood has been collected and before any plasma is directed from the rotor.
- 7. A method according to claim 6, wherein the collection system is further provided with a second container, and wherein the method further includes the steps of directing the plasma from the rotor to the first container and directing the red blood cells from the rotor to a second container.
- 8. A method according to claim 7, further including the steps of:
- adding a solution to the rotor after the plasma has been directed from the rotor to the first container but before the red blood cells have been directed from the rotor;
- agitating the rotor so as to mix the solution and the red blood cells; and
- after the solution and the red blood cells have been mixed, separating the solution and the red blood cells.
- 9. A method of collecting into a collection system a volume of whole blood from a donor, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing a collection system having a centrifuge rotor for receiving the blood;
- connecting the donor to the collection system;
- drawing blood from the connected donor into the collection system without returning blood components to the donor;
- disconnecting the donor from the collection system after the blood is drawn from the donor;
- using the collection system to separate the blood into first and second components by centrifugation; and
- removing the first component from the rotor into a storage container.
- 10. A method according to claim 1, wherein the blood is collected and processed in a variable-volume rotor.
- 11. A method according to claim 1, wherein the collection system is provided with a second storage container, and further including the step of directing the second component from the rotor to the second container.
- 12. A method of collecting and processing blood from a donor, the method comprising:
- drawing whole blood from a donor through venous-access means;
- adding anticoagulant from a first container to the whole blood;
- directing the whole blood from the venous-access means to a variable-volume rotor, the rotor provided with a rigid member and an elastic wall defining the total volume;
- spinning the variable-volume rotor so as to separate the whole blood into plasma and red blood cells;
- directing the plasma from the rotor to the first container; and
- directing the red blood cells from the rotor to a second container.
- 13. A method according to claim 49, wherein the control unit provides a control fluid to a region adjacent the elastic wall so as to control the total volume of the rotor.
- 14. A method according to claim 50, wherein the control fluid is a gas.
- 15. A method of collecting into a collection system a volume of blood from a donor so as separate the blood into components, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing a collection system having a centrifuge rotor for receiving the blood;
- connecting the donor to the collection system;
- drawing the blood from the connected donor into the collection system;
- disconnecting the donor from the collection system after the blood is drawn from the donor;
- using the collection system to separate the blood into first and second components by centrifugation; and
- removing the first component from the rotor into a first storage container after the collection system is disconnected from the donor.
- 16. A method according to claim 15, further including the step of removing the second component from the rotor into a second storage container.
- 17. A method of collecting blood into a collection system comprising:
- connecting a donor to the collection system, the collection system including a rotor defining a chamber of varying volume,
- collecting a volume of whole blood from the donor,
- disconnecting the donor from the collection system,
- using the collection system to separate the blood into its components by centrifugation; and
- providing an interlock device to prevent the collection system from urging processed blood components from the rotor until the donor has been disconnected from the collection system.
- 18. A method of collecting and separating blood, comprising the steps of:
- providing a processing set with venous-access means;
- providing a control device to control both collection and separation of blood in the processing set;
- connecting a donor to the venous-access means;
- collecting a volume of blood into the processing set, while the processing set is attached to and controlled by the control device;
- disconnecting the donor from the venous-access means without having returned any fluids from the processing set to the donor; and
- separating the blood into first and second components within the processing set while it is attached to and controlled by the control device.
- 19. A method of collecting into a collection system a volume of whole blood from a donor, the method comprising:
- providing a collection system comprising a centrifuge rotor, a first container and a second container, the rotor defining a chamber of varying volume;
- connecting the donor to the collection system;
- drawing blood from the connected donor into the collection system without returning blood components to the donor;
- disconnecting the donor from the collection system after the blood is drawn from the donor;
- using the collection system to separate the blood into first and second components by centrifugation;
- directing the first component from the rotor to the first container; and
- directing the second component from the rotor to the second container.
