Claims
- 1. An isolated bone morphogenetic protein -3 (BMP-3) comprising an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of:(a) amino acids 1 through 175 of FIGS. 1A-1B; and (b) amino acids 377 through 472 of FIGS. 2A-2C.
- 2. The protein of claim 1 further characterized by the ability to induce the formation of cartilage and/or bone.
- 3. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a BMP-3 of claim 1 in admixture with a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle.
- 4. A composition for bone and/or cartilage formation comprising an amount effective for the induction of bone and/or cartilage formation in a patient in need of same of BMP-3 of claim 1 in a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle.
- 5. The composition of claim 4 further comprising a matrix for supporting said composition and providing a surface for bone and/or cartilage growth.
- 6. The composition of claim 5 wherein said matrix comprises a material selected from the group consisting of hydroxyapatite, collagen, polylactic acid and tricalcium phosphate.
- 7. A method for inducing formation of chondrocyte and/or cartilage tissue in a patient comprising minister to said patient a composition comprising an amount of the BMP-3 of claim 1 effective to induce formation of chondrocyte and/or cartilage tissue.
- 8. A purified BMP-3 polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence set forth in FIGS. 2A-2C encoded by nucleotides 321 through 1736 of FIGS. 2A-2C.
- 9. An isolated bone morphogenetic protein comprising two subunits wherein comprise said subunits comprises an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of:(a) amino aids 1 through 175 of FIGS. 1A-1B; and (b) amino acids 377 through 472 of FIGS. 2A-2C.
