Claims
- 1. An adhesive formed from a crosslinking agent and a polyester itself formed from at least four different organic moieties:
- (1) at least one diol moiety having 2-14 carbons;
- (2) at least one triol or higher polyol moiety having 3-14 carbons;
- (3) at least one dibasic aromatic acid moiety; and
- (4) at least one dibasic aliphatic acid moiety,
- the mole ratio X.sub.1 of total polyol to total polyacid being in the range 1.25/1 to 1.8/1,
- the mole ratio X.sub.2 of diol to higher polyol eing in the range of 0.8/1 to 1.5/1, and
- the mole ratio X.sub.3 of aromatic acid to total acid being in the range 0.3/1 to 0.8/1,
- not all of X.sub.1, X.sub.2 and X.sub.3 being at their extremes simultaneously,
- said polyester having an acid number of less than 5.
- 2. An adhesive of claim 1 in solution in at least one organic solvent of the group consisting of methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, acetone, dimethyl sulfoxide, isophorone, and N-methyl pyrrolidone.
- 3. An adhesive of claim 2 wherein the solution contains about 3-25% by weight, based on the weight of solids, of a polyisocyanate crosslinking agent.
- 4. An adhesive of claim 1 wherein the polyester is formed from (1) ethylene glycol, (2) at least one of trimethylolpropane, glycerine, pentaerythrytol, 1,2,6-hexanetriol and trimethylolethane, (3) at least one phthalic acid, and (4) at least one of adipic and azelaic acids.
- 5. An adhesive of claim 4 in solution in at least one organic solvent of the group consisting of methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, acetone, dimethyl sulfoxide, isophorone, and N-methyl pyrrolidone.
- 6. An adhesive of claim 5 wherein the solution contains about 3-25% by weight, based on the weight of solids, of a polyisocyanate crosslinking agent.
- 7. An adhesive of claim 4 wherein the polyester is formed from ethylene glycol, trimethylolpropane, at least one of terephthalic and isophthalic acids, and at least one of adipic and azelaic acids.
- 8. An adhesive of claim 7 in solution in at least one organic solvent of the group consisting of methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, acetone, dimethyl sulfoxide, isophorone, and N-methyl pyrrolidone.
- 9. An adhesive of claim 8 wherein the solution contains about 3-25% by weight, based on the weight of solids, of a polyisocyanate crosslinking agent.
- 10. An adhesive of claim 3, 6 or 9 wherein the polyisocyanate crosslinking agent is toluene diisocyanate or an adduct of toluene diisocyanate and an aliphatic polyol.
- 11. The process of bonding two surfaces together which comprises applying to at least one surface an adhesive of claim 3, contacting the other surface with the adhesive on the first surface, and curing the adhesive while the surfaces contact the same.
- 12. The process of bonding the surfaces of flexible plastics together which comprises applying to at least one surface an adhesive of claim 3, contacting the other surface with the adhesive on the first surface, and curing the adhesive while the surfaces contact the same.
- 13. The process of claim 11, accomplished continuously.
- 14. The process of claim 11, wherein at least one surface is poly(ethylene terephthalate).
- 15. The process of claim 11, wherein at least one surface is polyethylene.
- 16. A laminate bound together by means of an adhesive of claim 1, 4 or 7.
- 17. A flexible laminate bound together by means of an adhesive of claim 1, 4 or 7.
- 18. A laminate wherein a poly(ethylene terephthalate) film and a polyethylene film are bound together by means of an adhesive of claim 1, 4 or 7.
