Claims
- 1. A buttoning means comprising in combination a pair of tufting buttons at least one of which is hollow and includes means defining an opening therein, the other of said buttons including an offstanding barbed shank portion terminating in a sharp point, adapted to be inserted in the means defining the opening in said first named button, said means defining the opening in said first named button including a separable collar element, tethering means connected to said collar element at one extremity thereof and having means at the other extremity to prevent removal of said tethering means from said means defining the opening, said tethering means being capable of retaining the said buttons in predetermined spaced relation after extraction of the collar element from said hollow button by said barbed shank upon assembly with an overstuffed article and said article has attained its finished dimension.
- 2. A method of securing buttons to the oppositely disposed surfaces of an overstuffed article comprising the steps of inserting a first button having an exposable surface on one side thereof and a barbed member extending axially therefrom on the other side thereof into the overstuffed article, causing the barbed member to penetrate entirely through the overstuffed article by compressing said overstuffed article until said barbed member can be seen from the opposite side thereof, applying a second button having an exposable surface and means defining an opening therein on the opposite surface thereof, said opposite surface containing an extractable collar element disposed within said means defining an opening, said extractable collar element and said second button being further connected by fastening tethering means to said extractable collar element and said second button, connecting said barbed member to said extractable collar element and releasing said overstuffed article from the compression to permit the overstuffed article to assume its finished dimension while being tensioned by said first and second buttons and said tethering means.
