Claims
- 1. A method for executing a remote transaction between a merchant and a customer, the method comprising:
transmitting, from a merchant processing system to a host system controlled by a money-transfer provider, a designation of a monetary amount for the remote transaction and an identification of the merchant; establishing, at the merchant processing system, a money-transfer transaction identifier identifying a prepared money-transfer transaction for transfer of the monetary amount; providing the money-transfer transaction identifier to the customer; and initiating performance of merchant obligations in accordance with the remote transaction after notification to the merchant processing system of receipt of a cash payment made by the customer towards the prepared money-transfer transaction.
- 2. The method recited in claim 1 wherein establishing the money-transfer transaction identifier comprises receiving the money-transfer transaction identifier from the host system.
- 3. The method recited in claim 1 wherein establishing the money-transfer transaction identifier comprises agreeing to the money-transfer transaction identifier with the merchant and customer.
- 4. The method recited in claim 1 further comprising notifying the customer of an amount of the cash payment to be made to the money-transfer provider.
- 5. The method recited in claim 4 further comprising notifying the customer of a constraint on making the cash payment.
- 6. The method recited in claim 4 wherein the amount of the cash payment is greater than the monetary amount.
- 7. The method recited in claim 1 wherein initiating performance of merchant obligations is performed after transfer of the monetary amount by the money-transfer provider to the control of the merchant.
- 8. The method recited in claim 7 further comprising receiving notification of the transfer of the monetary amount from the host system.
- 9. The method recited in claim 8 wherein notification of the transfer of the monetary amount is received substantially contemporaneously with the transfer of the monetary amount.
- 10. The method recited in claim 7 further comprising receiving notification of the transfer of the monetary amount from a financial institution holding the monetary amount on behalf of the merchant.
- 11. The method recited in claim 10 wherein the financial institution is the money-transfer provider.
- 12. The method recited in claim 1 wherein:
the remote transaction comprises sale of a product from the merchant to the customer, and initiating the performance of merchant obligations comprises initiating shipment of the product to the customer.
- 13. The method recited in claim 1 further comprising receiving, at the merchant processing system, a notification that the money-transfer transaction has been effected.
- 14. The method recited in claim 13 wherein receiving the notification comprises receiving the notification from the host system.
- 15. The method recited in claim 13 wherein receiving the notification comprises receiving an acknowledgment of receipt of the monetary amount by a financial institution.
- 16. A method for coordinating payment for a remote transaction between a merchant and a customer, the method comprising:
receiving, at a host system from a merchant processing system, a designation of a monetary amount for the remote transaction and an identification of the merchant; transmitting a money-transfer transaction identifier from the host system to the merchant processing system to identify a prepared money-transfer transaction for transfer of the monetary amount; thereafter, receiving at the host system acknowledgment of receipt of a cash payment associated with the money-transfer transaction identifier; and effecting the prepared money-transfer transaction by transferring the monetary amount to the control of the merchant.
- 17. The method recited in claim 16 further comprising notifying the merchant processing system that the prepared money-transfer transaction has been effected.
- 18. The method recited in claim 16 wherein:
receiving the designation of the monetary amount comprises receiving information over the Internet; and transmitting the money-transfer transaction identifier comprises transmitting information over the Internet.
- 19. The method recited in claim 16 wherein the cash payment is greater than the monetary amount.
- 20. A computer-readable storage medium having a computer-readable program embodied therein for directing operation of a merchant processing system including a processor, a communications system, and a storage device, wherein the computer-readable program includes instructions for operating the computer system to execute a remote transaction between a merchant and a customer in accordance with the following:
transmitting to a host system controlled by a money-transfer provider a designation of a monetary amount for the remote transaction and an identification of the merchant; establishing a money-transfer transaction identifier identifying a prepared money-transfer transaction for transfer of the monetary amount; providing the money-transfer transaction identifier to the customer; and initiating performance of merchant obligations in accordance with the remote transaction after notification to the merchant processing system of receipt of a cash payment made by the customer towards the prepared money-transfer transaction.
- 21. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 20 wherein the instructions for establishing the money-transfer transaction identifier comprise instructions for receiving the money-transfer transaction identifier from the host system.
- 22. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 20 wherein the instructions for establishing the money-transfer transaction identifier comprise instructions for agreeing to the money-transfer transaction identifier with the merchant and customer.
- 23. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 20 wherein the computer-readable program further includes instructions for notifying the customer of an amount of the cash payment to be made to the money-transfer provider.
- 24. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 23 wherein the amount of the cash payment is greater than the monetary amount.
- 25. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 20 wherein the instructions for initiating performance of merchant obligations are executed after transfer of the monetary amount by the money-transfer provider to the control of the merchant.
- 26. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 20 wherein the computer-readable program further includes instructions for receiving notification of the transfer of the monetary amount from the host system.
- 27. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 26 wherein notification of the transfer of the monetary amount is received substantially contemporaneously with the transfer of the monetary amount.
- 28. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 20 wherein the computer-readable program further includes instructions for receiving notification of the transfer of the monetary amount from a financial institution holding the monetary amount on behalf of the merchant.
- 29. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 28 wherein the financial institution is the money-transfer provider.
- 30. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 20 wherein:
the remote transaction comprises sale of a product from the merchant to the customer; and the instructions for initiating the performance of merchant obligations comprise instructions for initiating shipment of the product to the customer.
- 31. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 20 wherein the computer-readable program further includes instructions for receiving a notification that the money-transfer transaction has been effected.
- 32. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 31 wherein the instructions for receiving the notification comprise instructions for receiving the notification from the host system.
- 33. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 31 wherein the instructions for receiving the notification comprise instructions for receiving an acknowledgment of receipt of the monetary amount by a financial institution.
- 34. A computer-readable storage medium having a computer-readable program embodied therein for directing operation of a host system including a processor, a communications system, and a storage device, wherein the computer-readable program includes instructions for operating the computer system to coordinate payment for a remote transaction between a merchant and a customer in accordance with the following:
receiving from a merchant processing system a designation of a monetary amount for the remote transaction and an identification of the merchant; transmitting a money-transfer transaction identifier to the merchant processing system to identify a prepared money-transfer transaction for transfer of the monetary amount; thereafter, receiving acknowledgment of receipt of a cash payment associated with the money-transfer transaction identifier; and effecting the prepared money-transfer transaction by transferring the monetary amount to the control of the merchant.
- 35. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 34 wherein the computer-readable program further includes instructions for notifying the merchant processing system that the prepared money-transfer transaction has been effected.
- 36. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 34 wherein:
the instructions for receiving the designation of the monetary amount comprise instructions for receiving information over the Internet; and the instructions for transmitting the money-transfer transaction identifier comprise instructions for transmitting information over the Internet.
- 37. The computer-readable storage medium recited in claim 34 wherein the cash payment is greater than the monetary amount.
