Claims
- 1. A catheter comprising:
- a body member having a distal end and a proximal end;
- a deflection control line slidable in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body member, the control line having a distal end attached to the body member wherein movement of said deflection control line controls deflection of the distal end of the body member; and
- a stiffening member disposed within the body member and slidable in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body member, said stiffening member providing increased rigidity to the portion of the body member in which the stiffening member is located.
- 2. The catheter of claim 1, further comprising a movable control device mounted to the body member and connected to the stiffening member, and further being adapted for a range of selective movement in relation to the body member, wherein selective movement of the control device controls the position of the stiffening member in the body member.
- 3. The catheter of claim 2, wherein the control device is adapted for rotational movement wherein selective rotational movement of the control device controls the position of the stiffening member in the body member.
- 4. The catheter of claim 2, further comprising a handle connected to the proximal end of the body member wherein the movable control device is mounted to the handle and has a plurality of positions within its range of selected movement, wherein the handle comprises indicia formed on said handle and located within the range of selected movement of the control device to indicate the position of the control device.
- 5. The catheter of claim 4, wherein the indicia indicate the sliding position of the control device.
- 6. The catheter of claim 4, wherein said indicia comprise gradations.
- 7. The catheter of claim 4, wherein said indicia comprise a colored band to indicate movement of the control device beyond a preselected position.
- 8. The catheter of claim 4, wherein the indicia indicate the rotational position of the control device.
- 9. The catheter of claim 1, further comprising a movable control device mounted to the body member and further being adapted for a range of selective movement in relation to the body member, wherein the deflection control line has a distal end fixedly attached to a distal portion of the body member and a proximal end attached to the control device so that tension applied to the control line by selective movement of the control device will cause deflection of the distal portion of the catheter.
- 10. The catheter of claim 9, wherein the control device is adapted for a range of selective movement in relation to the body member and the control device is mounted to a proximal end of the stiffening member wherein selective movement of the control device controls the position of the stiffening member in the body member.
- 11. The catheter of claim 10, wherein the control device is adapted for selective simultaneous sliding and rotating movement.
- 12. The catheter of claim 11, wherein the stiffening member is connected to the control device such that rotating movement of the control device controls the position of the stiffening member in the body member.
- 13. The catheter of claim 12 wherein sliding movement of the control device controls the tension applied to the control line.
- 14. The catheter of claim 11 wherein sliding movement of the control device controls the tension applied to the control line.
- 15. The catheter of claim 9 wherein sliding movement of the control device controls the tension applied to the control line.
- 16. The catheter of claim 9 further comprising a handle connected to the proximal end of the body member wherein the control device is mounted to the handle and has a plurality of positions within its range of selected movement, wherein the handle comprises indicia formed on said handle and located within the range of selected movement of the control device to indicate the position of the control device.
- 17. A catheter comprising:
- a body member having a distal end and a proximal end;
- a deflection control line disposed within the body member and slidable in directions parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body member, wherein movement of said deflection control line controls deflection of the distal end of the body member;
- a stiffening member disposed within the body member and slidable in directions parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body member, said stiffening member providing increased rigidity to the portion of the body member in which the stiffening member is located;
- a handle connected to the proximal end of the body member; and
- a movable control device adapted for selective movement, wherein the movable control device is mounted to the handle and has a plurality of positions within a range of selected movement,
- wherein the handle comprises indicia formed on said handle and located within the range of selected movement of the control device to indicate the position of the control device.
- 18. The catheter of claim 17, wherein said indicia comprises visible gradations.
- 19. The catheter of claim 17, wherein said indicia comprises a colored band to indicate movement of the control device beyond a preselected position.
- 20. The catheter of claim 17, wherein the control device is adapted for selective simultaneous sliding and rotating movement.
- 21. The catheter of claim 20, wherein the indicia indicates the rotational position of the control device.
- 22. The catheter of claim 20, wherein the indicia indicates the sliding position of the control device.
- 23. A catheter comprising:
- an elongated body member having a distal portion and a proximal portion;
- an elongated first device movably mounted in said body member, movement of said first device providing selectively varying stiffness of the body member in accordance with the location in the body member of the first device; and
- an elongated second device movably mounted in said body member, movement of said second device in relation to the body member providing independent selectively variable deflection of the distal portion of the body member in accordance with said movement.
- 24. The catheter of claim 23, further comprising a movable control device mounted to the body member and connected to the first and second devices and being adapted for selective movement, wherein selective movement of the control device in a first direction variably controls the position of the first device thereby controlling stiffness of the body member, and selective movement of the control device in a second direction independently controls the position of the second device thereby controlling said deflection of the distal portion of the body member.
- 25. The catheter of claim 24, wherein the control device is adapted for selective simultaneous sliding and rotating movement.
- 26. The catheter of claim 25, wherein sliding movement of the control device controls the stiffness of the body member, and rotational movement of the control device controls the deflection of the distal portion of the body member.
- 27. The catheter of claim 23, further comprising a handle connected to the proximal end of the elongated body member;
- wherein the movable control device is mounted to the handle and has a plurality of positions within a range of selected movement,
- wherein the handle comprises indicia formed on said handle and located within the range of selected movement of the control device to indicate the stiffness of the body member.
- 28. The catheter of claim 27, further comprising indicia formed on the handle to indicate the deflection of the distal portion of the body member.
- 29. A catheter comprising:
- a body member having a distal end and a proximal end;
- a stiffening member disposed within the body member and slidable in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body member, said stiffening member providing increased rigidity to the portion of the body member in which the stiffening member is located; and
- a rotatable control device adapted for selective rotation, wherein the stiffening member is connected at its proximal end to the control device such that rotating movement of the control device controls the position of the stiffening member in the body member.
- 30. The catheter of claim 29, further comprising a handle connected to the proximal end of the body member;
- wherein the control device is mounted to the handle and has a plurality of positions within a range of selected movement;
- wherein the handle comprises indicia formed on said handle and located within the range of selected movement of the control device indicating the position of the stiffening member in the body member.
