Claims
- 1. A dilatation catheter for performing an angioplasty procedure, comprising:
- a) an elongated catheter having a proximal shaft section and a distal shaft section;
- b) an inner lumen extending through the proximal shaft section and into the distal shaft section;
- c) a tubular element formed of a NiTi alloy which defines at least in part the inner lumen extending through the proximal shaft section; and
- d) an inflatable dilatation balloon on the distal shaft section having an interior in fluid communication with the inner lumen extending within the distal shaft section.
- 2. The dilatation catheter of claim 1 wherein the tubular element formed of NiTi alloy forms at least a portion of the distal shaft section and defines at least in part the inner lumen extending within the distal shaft section.
- 3. The dilatation catheter of claim 2 wherein the tubular element formed of NiTi alloy which forms at least a portion of the distal shaft section tapers in a distal direction to a smaller outer diameter.
- 4. The dilatation catheter of claim 3 wherein the tubular element of NiTi alloy exhibits shape memory.
- 5. The dilatation catheter of claim 1 wherein the tubular element of NiTi alloy exhibits superelastic properties.
- 6. An intravascular catheter having an elongated catheter shaft comprising
- a distal shaft portion which has a balloon with an interior thereon and a first inner lumen extending therein in fluid communication with the interior of the balloon; and
- a proximal shaft portion which has a inner lumen extending therein which is in fluid communication with the first inner lumen of the distal shaft section and which is formed at least in part by a tubular element with at least part of the second inner lumen extending therethrough and formed of NiTi alloy.
- 7. The intravascular catheter of claim 6 wherein the distal shaft portion tapers in the distal direction to a smaller outer diameter in at least one step.
- 8. The dilatation catheter of claim 6 wherein the tubular element exhibits shape memory.
