Claims
- 1. An electrochemical device, comprising:
(a) an electrode assembly comprising:
i) an elongated positive electrode with a first longitudinal edge; ii) an elongated negative electrode with a first longitudinal edge; and iii) a separation layer having a first longitudinal edge and a second longitudinal edge; wherein the positive electrode, the separation layer, and the negative electrode are wound around a central axis thereby forming a coil of alternating electrode and separation layers such that the separation layer prevents direct contact between successive electrode layers, the first longitudinal edge of the separation layer extends beyond the first longitudinal edge of the separation layer, and the first longitudinal edge of the negative electrode extends beyond the second longitudinal edge of the separation layer.
- 2. The electrochemical device of claim 1, further comprising:
(b) a housing having a positive terminal electrically coupled to the first longitudinal edge of the positive electrode and a negative terminal electrically coupled to the first longitudinal edge of the negative electrode, wherein the electrode assembly is enclosed by the housing; and (c) an electrolyte adjacent to the electrode assembly and enclosed within the housing.
- 3. The electrochemical device of claim 2, wherein the housing includes a first cup including the positive terminal, a second cup including the negative terminal, wherein the first cup and the second cup are joined together to form the housing such that the first and second cups are electrically isolated from one another and further wherein the positive terminal and negative terminal are generally planar.
- 4. The electrochemical device of claim 3, wherein the electrode assembly is sealed from the ambient atmosphere by the housing.
- 5. The electrochemical device of claim 4, further comprising a pressure release feature which relieves pressure build-up within the housing when the pressure within the housing reaches a predetermined limit, wherein the electrochemical device is still operable after the pressure build-up within the housing is released.
- 6. The electrochemical device of claim 5, wherein the pressure release component is selected from the group consisting of a resilient member and a spring.
- 7. The electrochemical device of claim 2, further comprising one or more additional electrochemical devices of claim 2, wherein the electrochemical device and the one or more additional electrochemical devices are electrically connected.
- 8. The electrochemical device of claim 1, further comprising a component coupled to the electrode assembly for shorting the electrode assembly when the electrode assembly becomes nonoperative.
- 9. The electrochemical device of claim 8, wherein the component for shorting the electrode assembly comprises a diode.
- 10. The electrochemical device of claim 2, wherein the housing includes channels which allow for a medium to circulate within, through or around the housing.
- 11. The electrochemical device of claim 2, wherein the positive electrode is not metallurgically attached to the positive terminal and negative electrode is not metallurgically attached to the negative terminal.
- 12. The electrochemical device of claim 2, wherein substantially the entire length of the first longitudinal edge of the positive electrode contacts the positive terminal and substantially the entire length of the first longitudinal edge of the negative electrode contacts the negative terminal.
- 13. The electrochemical device of claim 1, wherein the first longitudinal edge of the separation layer is oriented opposite the second longitudinal edge of the separation layer.
- 14. The electrochemical device of claim 2, wherein the composition of the positive electrode is the same as the composition of the positive terminal and the composition of the negative electrode is the same as the composition of the negative terminal.
- 15. The electrochemical device of claim 1, wherein the separation layer is generally longitudinally Z-shaped, the positive electrode and negative electrode reside within successive folds of the separation layer and the longitudinal edges of the separation layers overlap the longitudinal edges of the adjacent separation layers, are bonded to the longitudinal edges of the adjacent separation layers or both, thereby preventing contact between successive electrode layers.
- 16. The electrochemical device of claim 7, wherein the housing removes heat created during operation of the device and the device does not require active cooling to prevent thermal failure.
- 17. An electrochemical device, comprising:
(a) an electrode assembly comprising:
i) an elongated positive electrode; ii) an elongated negative electrode; and iii) a separation layer; wherein the positive electrode, the separation layer, and the negative electrode are wound around a central axis thereby forming a coil of alternating electrode and separation layers such that the separation layer prevents direct contact between successive electrode layers; and (b) a component coupled to the electrode assembly for shorting the electrode assembly when the electrode assembly becomes nonoperative.
- 18. The electrochemical device of claim 17, further comprising:
(c) a housing having a positive terminal electrically coupled to a first longitudinal edge of the positive electrode and a negative terminal electrically coupled to a first longitudinal edge of the negative electrode, wherein the electrode assembly is enclosed by the housing; and (d) an electrolyte in contact with the positive electrode and negative electrode wherein the electrolyte is enclosed by the housing.
- 19. The electrochemical device of claim 18, wherein the electrode assembly is sealed from the ambient atmosphere by the housing.
- 20. The electrochemical device of claim 19, further comprising a pressure release component which relieves pressure build-up within the housing when the pressure within the housing reaches a predetermined limit, wherein the electrochemical device is still operable after the pressure build-up within the housing is released.
- 21. An electrochemical device, comprising:
(a) an electrode assembly comprising:
i) an elongated positive electrode; ii) an elongated negative electrode; and iii) a separation layer; wherein the positive electrode, the separation layer, and the negative electrode are wound around a central axis thereby forming a coil of alternating electrode and separation layers such that the separation layer prevents direct contact between successive electrode layers; (b) a housing having a positive terminal electrically coupled to a first longitudinal edge of the positive electrode and a negative terminal electrically coupled to a first longitudinal edge of the negative electrode, wherein the electrode assembly is enclosed by the housing; (c) an electrolyte enclosed by the housing wherein the electrolyte is in contact with the electrode assembly; and (d) a pressure release component which relieves pressure build-up within the housing when the pressure within the housing reaches a predetermined limit, wherein the electrochemical device is still operable after the pressure build-up within the housing is released.
