Claims
- 1. An inked cartridge assembly for use with a check writer for imprinting checks, money orders and other negotiable instruments, the check writer including a frame means having cartridge support means and a printing mechanism including a printing line, the inked cartridge assembly comprising:
- an inked ribbon;
- a spool comprised of a n elongated central shaft having a drive gear associated therewith;
- first and second housing members sealingly assemble d together to provide a spool receiving chamber for enclosing said inked ribbon and said spool therein, with one end of said central shaft having a counterbore therein structurally arranged to receive and mount a cartridge turn means to said shaft and the other and of said central shaft opposite said one end including means engageable with the cartridge support means for removably securing the cartridge assembly to the frame means and supporting said inked ribbon adjacent the printing line;
- shaft tensioning means engageable with said other end of said central shaft opposite said one end and the cartridge support means for providing a constant and positive tension on said central shaft upon rotation of said drive gear; and
- a ribbon guide portion and a throat portion communicating said spool receiving chamber with said ribbon guide portion, with said inked ribbon being adapted for bidirectional advancement through said ribbon guide portion past the printing line.
- 2. The inked cartridge assembly in accordance with claim 1, wherein said cartridge turn means is a knob secured to said central shaft by engaging said counterbore to rotate said spool within said housing members to rewind said inked ribbon onto said spool to provide bidirectional advancement of said inked ribbon through said ribbon guide portion.
- 3. The inked cartridge assembly in accordance with claim 1, wherein said shaft tensioning means engageable with the cartridge support means on said other end of said central shaft opposite said one end includes a pair of curvilinear surfaces which are structurally arranged to engage the cartridge support means.
- 4. The inked cartridge assembly in accordance with claim 1, wherein said means engageable with the cartridge support means is a spring clip member for removably mounting the cartridge assembly to the frame means.
- 5. In a check writer for imprinting commercial checks, personal checks, money orders, and other negotiable instruments, having a frame means defining a printing line, a housing engageable with the frame means, a plurality of type segment members each having a set of printing characters on the peripheral printing face thereof, with each member being supported by the frame means and each printing face having a uniform width and length of dimension and with each of the type segment members being selectively moveable to locate the printing characters on the printing line, a prefix plate holder assembly associated with the frame means, and including a mounting portion extending therefrom, having curvilinear sidewalls which terminate with a flat planar bottom wall and one sized prefix plate member having a complimentary elongated cavity therein extending the length of the prefix plate member with the cavity being defined by curvilinear sidewalls and a flat top wall of the plate member which permits mounting the prefix plate member to the prefix holder assembly and permits the sliding movement of the prefix plate with respect to the holder assembly, and with the mounting portion being structurally arranged to receive and mount the prefix plate member to engage various type segment capacity configurations, platen means supported by the frame and structurally arranged for cooperation with the printing characters disposed on the printing line, actuating means supported by the frame means and being movable from an at rest non-printing position to a printing position for effecting the printing operation, and linkage means operatively coupled to the actuating means and structurally arranged and coupled to the platen means for moving the platen means from an at rest position to a printing position to provide pressure contact between the negotiable instrument and the printing characters on the type segment members located on the printing line when the actuating means is in the printing position and for moving the platen means to its normal at rest position in the return movement of the actuating means to its at rest non-printing position, the improvement comprising:
- a cartridge member having an inked ribbon mounted to a shaft and ribbon support means therein associated with the frame means for supporting and positioning the inked ribbon adjacent to the printing characters disposed on the printing line, with the cartridge member being removably mounted to the frame means by biasing means engaging said shaft and with a tensioning member associated with the frame means and engageable with said shaft for providing a tension on said shaft during movement of the platen-means between the at rest position and the printing position.
- 6. In a check writer in accordance with claim 5, wherein said ribbon support means supporting and positioning said inked ribbon adjacent the printing line is a spring clip member structurally arranged to engage the frame means and said cartridge member.
- 7. In a check writer in accordance with claim 5, wherein said spring clip member 10 is comprised of a pair of curvilinear surfaces which are adapted to engage the frame means.
