Claims
- 1. A chemoelectric cell comprising:
- a positive electrode,
- a negative electrode spaced from said positive electrode to define an interspace therebetween for conducting electrolyte,
- one of said electrodes comprising a gas electrode having one side facing said interspace,
- a porous separator disposed in said interspace and abutting against said side of said gas electrode,
- said separator defining passageways open toward said side of said gas electrode for conducting gaseous substance from an inlet end to an outlet end of said interspace;
- portions of said side of said gas electrode located along said passageways being coated with electrolyte repellant material,
- means for delivering electrochemically active gaseous substance into said passageways for travel along and reaction with said portions of said side of said gas electrode that are coated by said electrolyte repellant material, and
- means for delivering liquid electrolyte to said interspace to impregnate said separator so that electrolyte is in contact with areas of said side of said gas electrode which are abutted by said separator.
- 2. A chemoelectric cell according to claim 1 wherein the ratio between the areas coated with electrolyte repellant material and the remaining areas of gas electrode surface is in the range of 5-20.
- 3. A chemoelectric cell according to claim 1 wherein the average distance for the current path between said electrolyte repellant and remaining areas of the gas electrode is no greater than about 1-2 cm.
- 4. A chemoelectric cell according to claim 1 wherein the average distance for the current path between said electrolyte repellant and remaining areas of the gas electrode is no greater than about 0.5-1 cm.
- 5. A chemoelectric cell according to claim 4, wherein said distance is within the range 0.2-0.5 cm.
- 6. A chemoelectric cell according to claim 1 wherein the negative electrode material is iron and the gas electrode is an air electrode.
- 7. A chemoelectric cell according to claim 1 wherein the positive electrode material is zinc and the gas electrode is an air electrode.
- 8. A chemoelectric cell according to claim 1 wherein the negative electrode material is cadmium and the gas electrode is an air electrode.
- 9. A chemoelectric cell according to claim 1 wherein the negative electrode material is zinc and the gas electrode is a chlorine electrode.
- 10. A chemoelectric cell according to claim 1 wherein the negative electrode is a hydrogen electrode and the positive electrode material is nickel oxide.
- 11. A chemoelectric cell according to claim 1 wherein the negative electrode is a hydrogen electrode and the positive electrode material is iron oxide.
- 12. A chemoelectric cell according to claim 1 wherein the negative electrode is a hydrogen electrode and the positive electrode is an air electrode.
- 13. A chemoelectric cell according to claim 1 wherein the negative electrode is a methanol electrode and the positive electrode is an air electrode.
