Claims
- 1. A chimeric cDNA which, when operably inserted as a heterologous DNA in a DNA of an expression host, encodes a chimeric polypeptide immunogen comprising the VP2 amino acid sequence of a first infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) strain except for at least one amino acid X, wherein X is an epitopic determinant from a second IBDV strain wherein said IBDV strains are selected from the group consisting of GLS, E/Del, D78, DS326, RS593, Cu-1, PBG98, 52/70, STC and 002-73, and wherein said immunogen comprises the amino acid sequence, in order, for IBDV structural proteins VP2-VP4-VP3.
- 2. A virus vector for the infection of an expression host, comprising the cDNA of claim 1 operably linked to the DNA of baculovirus fowlpox virus, turkey herpes virus or adenovirus.
- 3. A host cell for the expression of a chimeric polypeptide immunogen comprising the VP2 amino acid sequence of a first infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) strain except for at least on amino acid X, wherein X is an epitopic determinant from a second IBDV strain, comprising an expression host selected from the group consisting of SF9 cells, chicken embryo fibroblast cells, chicken embryo kidney cells and vero cells transfected with the vector of claim 2.
- 4. The chimeric cDNA of claim 1, wherein said VP2 amino acid sequence comprises a plurality of different epitopic determinants X.
- 5. The chimeric cDNA of claim 4, wherein said plurality of epitopic determinants X are from at least two different IBDV strains.
- 6. The chimeric cDNA of claim 1, wherein said immunogen is in a form mimicking the three-dimensional structure of IBDV.
- 7. The chimeric cDNA of claim 6, wherein said immunogen exhibits at least one IBDV conformational epitope.
- 8. The chimeric cDNA of claim 1, wherein said amino acid sequence comprises an epitopic determinant X of a lethal IBDV strain.
- 9. The chimeric cDNA of claim 8, wherein said epitopic determinant of lethal IBDV strains comprises the amino acid Asp at position 279 of the VP2 sequence.
