Claims
- 1. A process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks comprising the steps of:
providing a circular flat sheet of glass with a hole centered therein; polishing a surface of said sheet of glass to a predetermined smoothness; mounting said sheet of glass on a rotatable support; rotating said rotatable support and said sheet of glass; abrading said rotating sheet of glass with coarse abrasives to produce an abrasion pattern, and smoothing said surface by abrading said sheet of glass with a slurry comprising colloidal silica, whereby the surface is provided a light texture for receiving a magnetic recordable media layer.
- 2. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 1 wherein said process further comprises the step of engaging a polishing pad against said surface in a direction to produce abrasion in a direction concentric with abrasions produced by said diamond abrasives, and supplying said slurry during rotation of said sheet of glass and said abrasion of said glass.
- 3. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 2 wherein said polishing pad are cylindrical and disposed in contact with said surface of said sheet of glass and further disposed with an axis of rotation of said pads substantially parallel to a radius of said glass sheet.
- 4. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 2 wherein said step of supplying said colloidal silica slurry comprises applying a plurality of discreet sprays during said abrading of said sheet of glass with said slurry.
- 5. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 3 wherein said step of supplying said colloidal silica slurry comprises applying a plurality of discrete sprays during said abrading of said sheet of glass with said slurry.
- 6. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 4 wherein said process comprises the step of etchant treating said glass sheet while abrading said glass sheet by supplying the said colloidal silica suspended in an etchant liquid.
- 7. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 5 wherein said process comprises the step of etchant treating said glass sheet while abrading said glass sheet by supplying the said colloidal silica suspended in an etchant liquid.
- 8. A process of preparing a glass substrate for coating with a magnetically recordable substance for producing a magnetically recordable disk comprising the steps of:
providing polished smooth surfaces on a circular glass sheet, said glass sheet defining a central aperture; texturing said polished surfaces with a coarse abrasive thereby creating a plurality of grooves arcuately disposed about said central aperture; smoothing said textured surface by polishing said textured surface, said smoothing comprising the steps of polishing said textured surfaces with a polishing pad and a slurry of colloidal silica, thereby providing a lightly textured surface.
- 9. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 8 wherein said texturing surface abrasions are substantially disposed concentrically on said disk surfaces.
- 10. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 8 wherein said smoothing step comprises the steps of engaging said polishing pads to engage abrasives with said polished surfaces in a movement along paths tangential relative to said surfaces abrasions and moving said abrasives tangentially while said glass disk is rotating.
- 11. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 10 wherein said process further comprises the step of supplying said slurry in intermittent sprays.
- 12. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 11 wherein said process further comprises the step of bathing said glass sheet with an acidic liquid suspending colloidal silica therein.
- 13. A process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks comprising the steps of:
providing a circular flat sheet of glass with a hole centered therein; polishing at least a surface of said sheet of glass to a predetermined smoothness; mounting said sheet of glass on an arbor; rotating said sheet of glass; smoothing said surface by abrading said sheet of glass with a slurry comprising colloidal silica.
- 14. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 13 wherein said process further comprises the step of rotating a polishing pad against said at least a surface of said sheet of glass in a direction to produce abrasion in a direction tangential to abrasions produced by said polishing step and continuously supplying said slurry during rotation of said sheet of glass and said abrasions on said glass.
- 15. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 14 wherein said polishing pad is cylindrical and disposed in contact with said at least a surface of said sheet of glass and further disposed substantially with an axis of rotation of said pad parallel to a radius of said glass sheet.
- 16. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 14 wherein said step of supplying said colloidal silica slurry comprises applying a plurality of separate sprays during said abrading with said slurry.
- 17. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 15 wherein said step of supplying said colloidal silica slurry comprises applying a plurality of separate sprays during said abrading with said slurry.
- 18. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 16 wherein said process comprises the step of acid treating said glass sheet by supplying said colloidal silica suspended in a glass etchant liquid.
- 19. The process of manufacture for producing glass disk substrates for magnetically recordable data storage disks of claim 17 wherein said process comprises the step of acid treating said glass sheet by supplying the said colloidal silica suspended in a glass etchant liquid.
