Claims
- 1. A releasable latch especially for passenger seat belts, comprising: a housing having a slot, a member having a tongue with a plane in a length defined thereby and with a flat side of the tongue insertable into the slot in the housing, notch means in the tongue substantially perpendicular to the plane of the tongue, roller bodies having axes in the housing engageable with said notch means when the tongue is inserted into said slot to latch the said housing and the said member together, said roller bodies having the axes thereof extending laterally to the length of the tongue and disposed for rolling engagement of the roller bodies with the tongue upon insertion of the tongue into the slot, said roller bodies rollingly engaging one another and lying in the path of said notch means, resilient means biasing said roller bodies in notch means engaging direction, and means for moving at least one of said roller bodies against the bias of said resilient means in the direction of disengagement from said notch means, said roller bodies being generally cylindrical, said housing having an opening on one side toward which said flat side of the tongue faces, a release member arranged in said opening, and a release cam in said housing actuated by movement of said release member and operable when so actuated to move said roller bodies out of engagement with said tongue.
- 2. A releasable latch according to claim 1 in which said roller bodies have axially central annular grooves formed therein.
- 3. A releasable latch especially for passenger seat belts, comprising: a housing having a slot, a member having a tongue with a plane in a length defined thereby and with a flat side of the tongue insertable into the slot in the housing, notch means in the tongue substantially perpendicular to the plane of the tongue, roller bodies having axes in the housing engageable with said notch means when the tongue is inserted into said slot to latch the said housing and the said member together, said roller bodies having the axes thereof extending laterally to the length of the tongue and disposed for rolling engagment of the roller bodies with the tongue upon insertion of the tongue into the slot, said roller bodies rollingly engaging one another and lying in the path of said notch means, resilient means biasing said roller bodies in notch means engaging direction, and means for moving at least one of said roller bodies against the bias of said resilient means in the direction of disengagement from said notch means, said roller bodies being generally cylindrical, said notch means comprising a hole in said tongue and said roller bodies move perpendicularly to said flat side of the tongue when engaging said hole to latch said member and housing together, said roller bodies when in said hole having the center of curvature thereof spaced from the side of the tongue from which the roller bodies enter the hole in the direction of movement of the roller bodies in tongue engaging direction.
- 4. A releasable latch according to claim 3 in which said housing includes a recess in which said roller bodies move substantially rectilinearly into and out of tongue disengaging position.
- 5. A releasable latch according to claim 1 in which said notch means comprises a lateral notch in each side edge of the tongue, said roller bodies comprising a pair of roller bodies in the housing moveable laterally into said notches, a spring biasing each pair of roller bodies in notch engaging direction, and disengaging means comprising a pair of opposed elements having tapered ends and moveable into engagement with said roller bodies from opposite sides to move said roller bodies in notch disengaging direction.
- 6. A releasable latch according to claim 1 in which said notch means is a hole in the tongue, said roller bodies being moveable laterally in said housing into and out of disengagement with said hole, an inner part in said housing in which said roller bodies are moveable, and a disengaging device moveable in said housing perpendicular to the plane of the hole and loosely engaging said roller bodies, said resilient means acting on said disengaging device, said disengaging device being accessible to manual actuation through a side wall of said housing.
