Claims
- 1. Polyester base film having on at least one surface thereof a subbing coating, which subbing coating comprises a product of reacting, at a temperature in the range 100.degree. C. to 300.degree. C., components I and III or components II and III of a composition which does not comprise addition polymerizable compounds or an aziridine, wherein components I, II and III are as follows:
- I. a polymer A having attached to its backbone carboxyl groups and/or groups which form carboxyl groups upon hydrolysis and a polymer B having attached to its backbone --SO.sub.3 X and/or --PO.sub.3 XY groups wherein X and Y are identical or different and denote an alkali metal, ammonium, organic quaternary ammonium, or hydrogen;
- II. a polymer A' having attached to its backbone carboxyl groups and/or groups which form carboxyl groups upon hydrolysis, and --SO.sub.3 X and/or --PO.sub.3 XY groups wherein X and Y are identical or different and denote an alkali metal, ammonium, organic quaternary ammonium or hydrogen;
- III. an organic compound C having at least two free hydroxy groups.
- 2. Polyester base film according to claim 1 wherein the subbing coating is a product of reacting components I and III wherein polymer A is a homopolymer or a copolymer and is made from one or more monomers (a) selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, acryloxy propionic acid, methacrylic acid, ethacrylic acid, maleic acid, maleic acid anhydride, itaconic acid, itaconic acid anhydride, vinyl benzoic acid, succinic acid and sorbic acid or from one or more monomers (a) and one or more monomers (b) selected from the group consisting of styrene, esters of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, hydroxyalkyl acrylates and -methacrylates, vinyl esters and vinyl ethers, and compound C contains a hydrocarbon nucleus to which at least two hydroxy groups are attached, said hydrocarbon nucleus being an alkylene radical, which may be interrupted by carbonyl, carbonyloxy, oxy or thio, or a phenylene, naphthylene, biphenylene or benzylene radical.
- 3. Polyester base film according to claim 2 wherein polymer B is polystyrene sulfonic acid.
- 4. Polyester base film according to claim 3 wherein polymer A is a copolymer which is poly(methylvinyl ether/maleic anhydride) and compound C is triethylene glycol.
- 5. Polyester base film according to claim 1 having on at least one surface thereof a primer coating and on at least one primer coating the subbing coating.
- 6. Polyester base film according to claim 1 wherein the said composition consists essentially of components I and III or components II and III.
- 7. Polyester base film according to claim 6 wherein the said composition consists essentially of a uniform blend of components I and III or components II and III.
- 8. Polyester base film, having on at least one surface thereof a subbing coating which subbing coating consists essentially of components I and III or components II and III, wherein I, II and III are as follows:
- I - a polymer A having attached to its backbone carboxyl groups and/or groups which form carboxyl groups upon hydrolysis and
- a polymer B having attached to its backbone --SO.sub.3 X and/or --PO.sub.3 XY groups, wherein X and Y are identical or different and denote an alkali metal, ammonium, organic quaternary ammonium or hydrogen;
- II - a polymer A' having attached to its backbone carboxyl groups and/or groups which form carboxyl groups upon hydrolysis, and --SO.sub.3 X and/or --PO.sub.3 XY groups, wherein X and Y are identical or different and denote an alkali metal, ammonium, organic quaternary ammonium or hydrogen;
- III - an organic compound C having at least two free hydroxy groups,
- wherein the subbing does not comprise addition polymerizable compounds.
- 9. Polyester base film according to claim 8 wherein the subbing coating consists essentially of a uniform blend of components I and III or components II and III.
- 10. Polyester base film according to claim 8, wherein polymer A is a homopolymer or a copolymer and is made from one or more monomers (a) selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, acryloxy propionic acid, methacrylic acid, ethacrylic acid, maleic acid, maleic acid anhydride, itaconic acid, itaconic acid anhydride, vinyl benzoic acid, succinic acid and sorbic acid or from one or more monomers (a) and one or more monomers (b) selected from the group consisting of styrene, esters of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, hydroxyalkyl acrylates and -methacrylates, vinyl esters and vinyl ethers.
- 11. Polyester base film according to claim 10 wherein monomer (b) is selected from the group consisting of styrene; methyl-, ethyl-, butyl-, ethylhexyl- and phenyl esters of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid; 2-hydroxyethylacrylate, 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate; 2-hydroxypropylacrylate, 2-hydroxypropylmethacrylate; 3-hydroxypropylmethacrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate; vinyl benzoate; methylvinyl ether; butylvinyl ether and phenylvinyl ether.
- 12. Polyester base film according to claim 11 wherein polymer B is polystyrene sulfonic acid.
- 13. Polyester base film according to claim 12 wherein polymer A' is a copolymer of a monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, acryloxy propionic acid, methacrylic acid, ethacrylic acid, maleic acid, maleic acid anhydride, itaconic acid, itaconic acid anhydride, vinyl benzoic acid, succinic acid and sorbic acid and a monomer which is styrene sulfonic acid.
- 14. Polyester base film according to claim 11 wherein polymer A' is a copolymer of a monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, acryloxy propionic acid, methacrylic acid, ethacrylic acid, maleic acid, maleic acid anhydride, itaconic acid, itaconic acid anhydride, vinyl benzoic acid, succinic acid and sorbic acid and a monomer which is styrene sulfonic acid.
- 15. Polyester base film according to claim 14 wherein compound C is a dihydroxy C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkylene or a dihydroxy C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkylene ether.
- 16. Polyester base film according to claim 15 wherein the subbing coating contains components I and III.
- 17. Polyester base film according to claim 16 wherein polymer B is polystyrene sulfonic acid.
- 18. Polyester base film according to claim 16 wherein Polymer A, Polymer B and Compound C comprise 35 to 70%, 10 to 40% and 10 to 50%, respectively, based on the dry weight, of the coating composition.
- 19. Polyester base film according to claim 11 wherein components I and III or components II and III are uniformly blended with one another.
- 20. Polyester base film according to claim 11 wherein monomer (a) is maleic acid anhydride and monomer (b) is styrene, vinyl acetate or a vinyl ether.
- 21. Polyester base film according to claim 20 wherein polymer A is a copolymer which is poly(methylvinyl ether/maleic anhydride).
- 22. Polyester base film according to claim 21 wherein polymer B is polystyrene sulfonic acid.
- 23. Polyester base film according to claim 22 wherein polymer A' is a copolymer of maleic anhydride and styrene sulfonic acid.
- 24. Polyester base film according to claim 23 wherein compound C is diethylene glycol or triethylene glycol.
- 25. Polyester base film according to claim 24 wherein the subbing coating contains components I and III.
- 26. Polyester base film according to claim 25 wherein Polymer A, Polymer B and Compound C comprise 35 to 70%, 10 to 40% and 10 to 50%, respectively, based on the dry weight, of the coating composition.
- 27. Polyester base film according to claim 24 wherein compound C is triethylene glycol.
- 28. Polyester base film according to claim 27 wherein the subbing coating contains components I and III.
- 29. Polyester base film according to claim 28 wherein Polymer A, Polymer B and Compound C comprise 35 to 70%, 10 to 40% and 10 to 50%, respectively, based on the dry weight, of the coating composition.
- 30. Polyester base film according to claim 8 wherein polymer B is polystyrene sulfonic acid.
- 31. Polyester base film according to claim 30 wherein polymer A' is a copolymer of a monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, acryloxy propionic acid, methacrylic acid, ethacrylic acid, maleic acid, maleic acid anhydride, itaconic acid, itaconic acid anhydride, vinyl benzoic acid, succinic acid and sorbic acid and a monomer which is styrene sulfonic acid.
- 32. Polyester base film according to claim 31 wherein compound C contains a hydrocarbon nucleus to which at least two hydroxy groups are attached, said hydrocarbon nucleus being an alkylene radical, which may be interrupted by carbonyl, carbonyloxy, oxy or thio, or a phenylene, naphthylene, biphenylene or benzylene radical.
- 33. Polyester base film according to claim 32 wherein the subbing coating contains components I and III.
- 34. Polyester base film according to claim 33 wherein Polymer A, Polymer B and Compound C comprise 35 to 70%, 10 to 40% and 10 to 50%, respectively, based on the dry weight, of the coating composition.
- 35. Polyester base film having on at least one surface thereof a primer coating and on at least one primer coating at least one aziridine-free subbing coating, which subbing coating comprises components I and III or components II and III, wherein components I, II and III are as follows:
- I - a polymer A having attached to its backbone carboxyl groups and/or groups which form carboxyl groups upon hydrolysis and a polymer B having attached to its backbone --SO.sub.3 X and/or --PO.sub.3 XY groups, wherein X and Y are identical or different and denote an alkali metal, ammonium, organic quaternary ammonium or hydrogen
- II - a polymer A' having attached to its backbone carboxyl groups and/or groups which form carboxyl groups upon hydrolysis, and --SO.sub.3 X and/or --PO.sub.3 XY groups, wherein X and Y are identical or different and denote an alkali metal, ammonium, organic quaternary ammonium or hydrogen
- III- an organic compound C having at least two free hydroxy groups,
- wherein the subbing coating does not comprise addition polymerizable compounds.
- 36. Polyester base film according to claim 35 wherein the subbing coating consists essentially of components I and III or components II and III.
- 37. Polyester base film according to claim 8 or 35, wherein the polyester is polyethyleneterephthalate (PET).
- 38. Polyester base film according to claim 8 or 35, wherein the subbing coating has a thickness of 1.times.10.sup.-7 to 1.times.10.sup.-4 cm.
- 39. Polyester base film according to claim 35, wherein the primer coating is a coating based on a water dispersible copolyester.
- 40. Polyester base film according to claim 39, wherein the copolyester is made from isophthalic acid and 5-sodiumsulfoisophthalic acid or from terephthalic acid and 5-sodium sulfoisophthalic acid.
- 41. Polyester base film according to claim 40, wherein the copolyester further comprises a surfactant.
- 42. Polyester base film according to claim 35, wherein the primer coating has a thickness of 1.times.10.sup.-7 to 1.times.10.sup.-4 cm.
- 43. Polyester base film according to claim 40 wherein the subbing coating consists essentially of components I and III or components II and III.
