Claims
- 1. A method of ascertaining the equivalent thermal barrier thickness of a coating comprising the steps of:
- using a laser beam, heating a first area on the coating having an unknown thermal barrier equivalent thickness;
- measuring the relative temperature distribution over a second area on the coating;
- comparing the measured temperature distribution with a collection of reference temperature distributions each representing a reference equivalent thermal barrier thickness; and
- selecting from the reference collection a reference temperature distribution representing the equivalent thermal barrier thickness of the coating.
- 2. The method of claim 1, in which the heating step comprises transferring heat onto the first area for a predetermined time; and
- the measuring step comprises measuring the relative temperature distribution over the second area a predetermined time after the transfer of heat to the first area.
- 3. A method of ascertaining the equivalent thermal barrier thickness of a coating comprising the steps of:
- using a laser beam, heating a first area on the coating having an unknown equivalent thermal barrier thickness;
- measuring a spatial temperature distribution over a second area on the coating;
- comparing the measured temperature distribution with a collection of reference temperature distributions, each representing an equivalent thermal barrier thickness; and
- selecting a distribution from the collection similar to that of the measured distribution.
- 4. A method of ascertaining the equivalent thermal barrier thickness of a coating comprising the steps of:
- using a laser beam, heating a first area on the coating having an unknown equivalent thermal barrier thickness;
- measuring a spatial temperature distribution over a second area on the coating;
- comparing the measured temperature distribution with a collection of reference temperature distributions, each representing an equivalent thermal barrier thickness; and
- selecting from the collection a reference temperature distribution related to the measured temperature distribution.
- 5. A method of ascertaining the equivalent thermal barrier thickness of a coating comprising the steps of:
- a. heating a first part of the coating using a laser pulse;
- b. generating a thermal profile of a second part of the coating at a predetermined time following the laser pulse;
- c. comparing the thermal profile with a collection of reference profiles, each reference profile representing a reference thermal barrier thickness; and
- d. selecting, from the collection, a reference profile which represents the equivalent thermal barrier thickness of the coating.
- 6. A method according to claim 5 in which the second part is annular in shape and surrounds the first part.
