Claims
- 1. A method for producing a colored toner for developing electrostatic images which comprises
- providing primary particles of polymer having acidic or basic polar groups,
- surface treating organic colorant selected from the group consisting of organic pigment, organic dye and mixtures thereof, with a surface treatment agent having the same ionic character as the primary particles in a dispersion of the primary particles in an aqueous media, such that the absolute value of .zeta.-potential in the state of an aqueous dispersion at pH 5 becomes 10 to 100 mV,
- mixing the primary particles with the surface treated organic colorant to thereby form secondary particles comprising aggregates of the primary particles and the surface treated organic colorant,
- further aggregating the secondary particles in an aqueous medium to form a dispersion of associated particles, and
- drying said dispersion of associated particles to form said toner.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the polymer having acidic or basic polar groups has a glass transition temperature of from about -30.degree. C. to about 80.degree. C. and wherein the primary particles of the polymer have a mean particle size of from about 0.01 .mu.m to about 8 .mu.m.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the step of mixing the primary particles with the surface treated particles forms secondary particles having a mean particle size in the range of from about 0.2 .mu.m to about 8 .mu.m.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the step of further aggregating the secondary particles forms associated particles having a mean particle size which is larger than the mean particle size of the secondary particles and is in the range of from 2.5 .mu.m to 12 .mu.m.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the colored toner has a degree of gelation of 2% or less.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein the colored toner has a degree of gelation of 1.80% or less.
- 7. The method of claim 1 wherein the colored toner has a degree of gelation of 1.00% or less.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the colored toner has a degree of gelation of 0.50% or less.
- 9. A method according to claim 1 which comprises
- adding the surface treated organic colorant to a dispersion of the primary particles of polymer having acidic or basic polar groups to form a mixture;
- stirring the mixture for from about 0.5 to 10 hours to form a dispersion of secondary particles having a particle size in the range of from 1 to 5 .mu.m;
- further stirring the dispersion of secondary particles under heating to allow the secondary particles to grow into associated particles having a particle size in the range of from 1 to 20 .mu.m;
- stabilizing the resulting dispersion of associated particles;
- stirring and heating the resulting stabilized dispersion of secondary particles at a temperature higher than the glass transition temperature of the polymer having acidic or basic polar groups until at least part of the contact portions between the secondary particles forming the associated particles fuse; and
- dehydrating, washing and drying the resulting fused associated particles.
- 10. The method of claim 1 which further comprises mixing the colored toner with a magnetic carrier to form a developer.
