Claims
- 1. A piston apparatus comprising:
- a piston crown;
- an engine block containing a cylinder, the piston crown located in the cylinder;
- a guide rail attached to the piston crown, the guide rail having a guide slot; and
- a guide rail key formed on the engine block wherein the guide rail key slidingly fits into the guide slot of the guide rail attached to the piston crown, wherein the guide rail keeps the piston crown substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the cylinder.
- 2. The piston apparatus of claim 1 wherein the guide rail is offset from a center of the piston crown so that the guide rail passes along side a crankshaft in the engine block during operation of the piston crown.
- 3. The piston apparatus of claim 1 further comprising a thrust pad attached to the piston crown, wherein the thrust pad slidingly engages a wall of the cylinder and keeps the piston crown axially centered therein.
- 4. The piston apparatus of claim 1 further comprising:
- a connecting rod having an open semicircular first end; and
- a connecting pin having a first side and a second side, wherein the first side of the connecting pin abuts a surface of the piston crown, and the second side of the connecting pin rotatably engages the open semicircular first end of the connecting rod, whereby the connecting rod partially rotates on the second side of the connecting pin.
- 5. The piston apparatus of claim 4 wherein the connecting pin and connecting rod are connected to the piston crown by a portion of the guide rail.
- 6. A connecting rod assembly comprising:
- a connecting rod having a first end for connecting the connecting rod to a crankshaft pin, the first end of the connecting rod having a semi-circular shape for engaging the crankshaft pin, wherein the first end of the connecting rod moves through an arc of less than 180.degree. and has a radius of curvature substantially the same as the radius of curvature of the crankshaft pin;
- a tabbed bearing fitting between an inside diameter of the connecting rod first end and an outside diameter of the crankshaft pin;
- a retaining means for retaining the connecting rod first end on the crankshaft pin; and
- an oil supply aperture formed in the tabbed bearing, wherein a tab of the tabbed bearing is positioned in the connecting rod first end whereby the tab restricts the rotation of the tabbed bearing relative to the connecting rod first end as the connecting rod first end rotates about the crankshaft pint the tab further maintains the oil supply aperture beneath the connecting rod first end.
- 7. The connecting rod assembly of claim 6 wherein a plurality of connecting rods are rotationally attached to a single crankshaft pin, the crankshaft pin having a length equal to the width of a single connecting rod first end.
- 8. A method for assembling an internal combustion piston engine, comprising the steps of:
- placing a piston crown in an engine block containing a cylinder, the piston crown located in the cylinder and adapted to move axially within the cylinder;
- attaching a guide rail to the piston crown, the guide rail having a guide slot; and
- forming a guide rail key on the engine block wherein the guide rail key slidingly fits into the guide slot of the guide rail attached to the piston crown, whereby the guide rail keeps the piston crown substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the cylinder.
- 9. The method of claim 8, wherein the step of attaching the guide rail further comprises the step of offsetting the guide rail from a center of the piston crown so that guide rail passes along side a crankshaft in the engine block during operation of the piston crown.
- 10. The method of claim 8, further comprising the step of attaching a thrust pad to the piston crown so that the thrust pad slidingly engages a wall of the cylinder and keeps the piston crown axially centered in the cylinder.
- 11. The method of claim 8, further comprising the steps of:
- providing a connecting rod having an open semicircular first end and an open semicircular second end; and
- providing a connecting pin having a first side and a second side, wherein the first side of the connecting pin abuts a surface of the piston crown, and the second side of the connecting pin rotatably engages the open semicircular first end of the connecting rod, whereby the connecting rod partially rotates on the second side of the connecting pin.
- 12. The method of claim 11, further comprising the step of attaching the connecting pin and the first end of the connecting rod to the piston crown with a portion of the guide rail.
- 13. The method of claim 11, further comprising the steps of:
- connecting the second end of the connecting rod to a crankshaft pin, the second end of the connecting rod rotatably engaging the crankshaft pin, wherein the second end of the connecting rod moves through an arc of less than 180.degree. and has a radius of curvature substantially the same as the radius of curvature of the crankshaft pin;
- providing a tabbed bearing between an inside diameter of the connecting rod second end and an outside diameter of the crankshaft pin;
- providing a retaining means for retaining the connecting rod second end on the crankshaft pin; and
- providing an oil supply aperture formed in the tabbed bearing, wherein a tab of the tabbed bearing is positioned in the connecting rod second end whereby the tab restricts the rotation of the tabbed bearing relative to the connecting rod second end as the connecting rod second end rotates about the crankshaft pin, the tab further maintaining the oil supply aperture beneath the connecting rod second end.
- 14. The method of claim 11 wherein the step of providing a connecting rod is the step of providing a plurality of connecting rods rotatably attached to the crankshaft pin, the crankshaft pin having a length equal to the width of a single connecting rod second end.
