Claims
- 1. A method of producing a composite expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) material comprising the steps of:
extruding a first PTFE material to form a first extrudate; extruding a second PTFE material to form a second extrudate, wherein the first PTFE material is more expandable than is the second PTFE material; forming a stack from at least one layer of the first extrudate and at least one layer of the second extrudate; and expanding the stack to form the composite expanded article.
- 2. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising the step of sintering the expanded article.
- 3. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising the step of drying the stack prior to the expanding step to remove mineral spirits from the first and second extrudates.
- 4. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein the expanding step includes radially expanding the stack.
- 5. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising the step of calendering the stack prior to the expansion step.
- 6. The method as recited in claim 3, further comprising the step of calendering the stack prior to the drying step.
- 7. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising the step of pressing the stack prior to the expansion step.
- 8. The method as recited in claim 3, further comprising the step of pressing the stack prior to the drying step.
- 9. The method as recited in claim 2, wherein after the being expanded and sintered, the second PTFE material comprises:
aggregations of nodes; short fibrils interconnecting the nodes to form the aggregations; and long fibrils interconnecting the aggregations.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein the long fibrils have average lengths of about 100 to 1000 microns.
- 11. The method of claim 9 wherein the long fibrils have average lengths of about 500 to 1000 microns.
- 12. The method of claim 9 wherein the short fibrils have average lengths of about 10 to 30 microns.
- 13. The method of claim 9, wherein the aggregations have densities of less than about 2.0 grams per cubic centimeter.
- 14. The method of claim 9, wherein the nodes have densities of about 2.0 to 2.2 grams per cubic centimeter.
- 15. A method of producing a composite expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) material comprising the steps of:
extruding an expandable first PTFE material to form a first extrudate; extruding a less expandable second PTFE material to form a second extrudate; forming a stack from at least one layer of the first extrudate and at least one layer of the second extrudate; calendering the stack; drying the stack to remove mineral spirits from the first and second extrudates; expanding the stack to form the composite expanded article; and sintering the expanded article.
