Claims
- 1. A process for forming a hybrid conversion coating on a ferrous metal substrate, comprising the steps of:(1) subjecting the ferrous metal substrate to a first oxidation to form a molecular iron/oxygen enriched intermediate coating; and (2) subjecting the substrate from step (1) to a second oxidation to form a predominantly magnetite, Fe3O4 coating.
- 2. The process of claim 1 also comprising the step of sealing the substrate with an appropriate topcoat after formation of the substrate in step (2) of claim 1.
- 3. The process of claim 1 also comprising the step of rinsing the substrate with water prior to performing step (1) of claim 1.
- 4. The process of claim 1 also comprising the step of rinsing the substrate with water after performing step (1) of claim 1.
- 5. The process of claim 1 also comprising the step of subjecting the ferrous metal substrate to treatment selected from cleaning, degreasing, descaling, and mixtures thereof prior to step (1) of claim 1.
- 6. The process of claim 1 also comprising the step of rinsing the substrate with water after performing step (2) of claim 1.
